State Softball Tournament: Sumiton Christian, Oakman eliminated in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY — Sumiton Christian and Oakman both came up short in Wednesday’s final elimination games at Lagoon Park as both teams saw their season come to an end.

Sumiton Christan dropped its opener to top-ranked G.W. Long in a 4-2 decision. In the elimination bracket, the Eagles won their opener over Thorsby before dropping a second narrow decision — 7-6 to No. 4 Sand Rock on Wednesday night. Jessica Aderholt’s Eagles close the season at 39-23-1.

Oakman lost its first game to No. 9 Wicksburg, but rebounded with a stunning 7-6 win over No. 3 Plainview. The Wildcats saw their season come to an end with an 8-4 loss to Geneva. Oakman ends the season at 20-17 under first-year head coach Jordan Burson.

Elimination game

No. 4 Sand Rock 7, No. 3 Sumiton Christian 6

Despite a comeback effort from a three-run deficit to Sand Rock, the Sumiton Christian Eagles fell 7-6 in their third game of the day on Thursday at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park.

In the final game, Anna Calloway pitched the first three innings, giving up four hits, a walk, one run and recording four strikeouts. Mak Miller pitched the final four innings with five strikeouts.

Offensively, Jessie Baughan went 2 for 4 with a solo home run, Taylor Whisonant was 2 for 4 with a run scored, a double and an RBI, AK Tyree went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a double, Kaley McCrary was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, Sarah Hadder went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs and Calloway had a hit with two runs scored.

Elimination game

Sumiton Christian 9, Thorsby 0

The Eagles bounced-back from the opening loss with a 9-0 victory over Thorsby.

Mak Miller pitched five shutout innings in the win, giving up two hits and walk, with three strikeouts. Ali Hollis continued the shutout through two innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Offensively, Baughan went 4 for 5 with two runs scored, a double and two RBIs, Whisonant was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBIs, Amber Hayes went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, McCrary was 2 for 4, Hadder went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Calloway had a hit with two runs scored and two RBIs and AK Tyree recorded a hit with an RBI.

First-round game

G.W. Long 4, Sumiton Christian 2

The Eagles opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to South Region top seed G.W. Long.

Anna Calloway pitched six innings in the loss, giving up seven hits, three walks and recording one strikeout.

At the plate, Jessie Baughan hit a solo home run, Sarah Hadder recorded a hit with an RBI, Taylor Whisonant had a double, Kaley McCrary hit a double with a run scored and Angel Whitlow recorded a hit.

Elimination game

Geneva 8, Oakman 4

Geneva pulled away from Oakman late to earn the 8-4 win in Wednesday night’s 3A elimination game.

Oakman trailed by just one run at 5-4 in the top of the seventh before a three-run Geneva home run helped the Panthers put the game away.

Oakman 8, Plainview 7

The Wildcats rebounded from an early 3-1 deficit to capture an 8-7 win over Plainview.

Katelyn Makemson pitched six innings in the victory, recording two strikeouts. Aston pitched the final inning, recording one strikeout.

Offensively, Iyana Canada went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI, Samantha Kelly was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a home run, Savannah Brown went 1 for 2 with a run scored, Chante Williams had a hit and Shalayiah Waid and AJ Barrentine scored a run each.

Wicksburg 11, Oakman 1, (5 innings)

Oakman fell in the day’s opener 11-1 to South Region runner-up Wicksburg in five innings.

Katlyn Makemson pitched the first three innings in the loss, with Jessy Aston pitching the final two innings, recording one strikeout.

At the plate, Iyana Canada went 2 for 3 with a run scored, while Chante Williams and Terrah Sherer were both 1 for 3.
