Scholarship deadline approaching for Space Camp

Posted

Area students can now apply for a scholarship to attend Space Camp in May.

Children ages 12-14 can apply for the Space Academy for Leading Students in Alabama program through Jan. 31.

According to a Facebook post from Sen. Greg Reed, R-Jasper, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and the Alabama Legislature have partnered to send one boy and one girl from each legislative district in Alabama to Space Camp.

Each legislative member will nominate two students from their district to attend the program.

"This is a wonderful opportunity that I am proud to be a part of," Reed said.

Students who participate in Space Camp learn about the history of the space program, explore STEM concepts and develop leadership skills.

This year's Space Camp in Huntsville will be from May 24 through May 29.

Scholarship recipients will receive free tuition, meals, lodging, a flight suit, and a T-shirt. Travel to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is not provided, however.

To apply for the program, visit https://spacecamp.fluidreview.com. More information can also be found at www.spacecamp.com/salsa.

Since 1982, thousands of students have had the opportunity to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through Space Camp.
