Rodeo set for Boldo this weekend

The Seventh Annual Jasper Ram Rodeo will be Friday and Saturday at the Boldo Arena at 719 Dowdey Rd., off Highway 69 near Boldo's ballfields.

Cynthia Kimbrell, the owner of Double K Rodeo Productions noted her husband, Kenneth Kimbrell, is from Jasper, growing up on Blackwell Dairy Road.

"We're so excited to do this hometown rodeo," she said. "We started this seven years ago when my husband and I got married. This is one of our favorite shows to do." She said all involved with the local show appear to love it, including the audiences. We're trying to find a bigger place eventually, but we want to find the right place before we leave any other place."

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m. "This is a rain or shine event," Kimbrell said. Tickets are $15 at the gate, cash or credit, while children 5 and under get in free.

The full eight-event rodeo will have such features as saddleback riding, the bareback riding, the ladies barrel racing, the ladies breakaway, the team roping, the calf-roping, the steer wrestling and the bull-riding. She noted everyone waits in anticipation for the bull-riding at the end of the night.

This rodeo is a featured on the rodeo schedule for the Southeastern Professional Rodeo Association, or SPRA ( "This is a sanctioned event" through the SPRA, she said. "They have a rodeo final in Philadelphia, Mississippi, every January, so these people are competing for prize money and points to be able to compete at the end for the finals.

"We will have over 100 competitors a day, at least," Kimbrell said, adding that she stages rodeos in about 12 cities a year through the Southeast, with seven in Florida.

Concession stands and food and merchandise vendors will be available, she said. A "kids calf scramble," where children try to get a ribbon off the tail of a calf, will also be held.

A clown, Jake Gray, will come from Florida and perform rope tricks, said Kimbrell, who also noted that everyone who works for the rodeo has a pro card. Mack Ginn, a pro rodeo announcer, will come from Mississippi.

Kimbrell also noted that the event has a good record in terms of safety.

The main sponsor for the event is Jasper Ford Chysler Dodge Jeep Ram, and Gunter Body Shop is a presenting sponsor. Nearly a dozen other smaller sponsors are listed.
