Rice Lake expands in Jasper

Posted

In an effort to expand manufacturing capacity and provide additional support to customers, Wisconsin-based Rice Lake is expanding its presence in Walker County with the purchase of an additional manufacturing building located in Bevill Industrial Park in Jasper.

Rice Lake Weighing Systems is a global leader in measurement equipment, with a manufacturing facility located in Curry.

The additional facility will increase manufacturing capacity for the company, where employees will produce Rice Lake SURVIVOR truck scales, among other product lines as production comes online.

“It is always good news when such a strong company decides to expand in your market,” Jasper Mayor David O’Mary said. “This is a company that has been an industry leader for more than 70 years now. They are a global player, and that brings only positives to our community.”

Rice Lake officials said they are looking forward to the facility becoming operational as soon as possible by hiring skilled employees and procuring advanced manufacturing equipment.

“Rice Lake Weighing Systems plans to maintain production at our existing facility in Curry, and we will be hiring additional staff for the new Jasper location,” said Mark Johnson Jr., president of Rice Lake Weighing Systems. “We are looking for excellent employees in welding, machining, material handling and painting, as well as scheduling and management positions.

“Rice Lake Weighing Systems—and previously as Powell All-Steel Scales—has enjoyed more than 30 years of manufacturing in Walker County and is grateful and proud of the community and those who have helped the company succeed,” Johnson added.

David Knight, director of the Walker County Development Authority and Jasper Industrial Development Board, said Rice Lake has already been a great employer in the area and the expansion should provide good jobs for area workers.

“Rice Lake Weighing System has been a tremendous business partner and employer here in Walker County for years,” Knight said. “The Industrial Board is thrilled with the company’s decision to expand into the former Fontaine Renew facility located in the Bevill Industrial Park. With over 100,000 square feet on 20 acres, this property provides ample space for long term growth.”

Rice Lake officials did not release information on the amount of new jobs the expansion will provide once it is at full production. Company officials said between 10 and 15 new workers will be needed in the initial production phase.

“With a facility as big as that one, I can’t help but think that it will be a substantial number of jobs once they are at capacity,” O’Mary said.
