An arrest is pending in the shooting of a 14-year-old girl that occurred Sunday in Jasper, Walker County Sheriff Jim Underwood said Monday.

Underwood confirmed that the girl was taken to Walker Baptist Medical Center by her mother after being shot in the back of the head.

A 43-year-old relative who turned a gun on himself is expected to be charged, Underwood said. He declined to say how the two were related. The man’s name is not being released until he is charged.

It is not certain if the 14-year-old lived in the home.

Deputies were called to WBMC at 10:34 a.m. Sunday by the officer working security at the hospital, according to Underwood.

While en route to 829 Boldo Road, the residence where the shooting had reportedly occurred, WCSO dispatcher Kathy Cole received a 911 call from a man inside the home threatening to harm himself.

Cole remained on the line with him until deputies arrived and discovered the man sitting in a recliner with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

He is currently being treated at a Birmingham hospital, and the 14-year-old is also recovering in a local hospital.
