Prep Volleyball: Jasper pushes Mountain Brook to limit in matchup of No. 1 teams

Jasper battled Mountain Brook to the fifth set in a matchup of No. 1 teams Thursday.

The Vikings, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, held a 2-1 lead after three sets but the home-standing Spartans, ranked No. 1 in Class 7A, battled back to the win the last two for a 25-18, 14-25, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11 victory.

The loss snapped Jasper's 20-match winning streak.

Also on Thursday, the Vikings picked up a five-set win over 7A Vestavia Hills, 25-16, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-13.

The Vikings close the regular season at 54-9 heading into Monday’s 5A, Area 11 Tournament at Carl Cannon Coliseum.

For the Vikings, McKinley Ferguson had 47 kills, 16 digs, 12 aces and three blocks in Thursday's matches, Alex Oliver had 37 kills, 14 blocks, 14 digs and two aces, Temperance Chatman had 90 assists, 20 digs and an ace, Kelsey Shelton had 19 digs, 15 blocks and 10 kills, Jordan Gilbert had 15 blocks, 11 kills, three digs and an ace, Dayion Johnson 10 blocks and seven kills and Tryneti Chatman had 12 digs.

On Monday, Jasper will open play at 3 p.m. against Corner or Dora in the area tournament.

Carbon Hill wins pair

Carbon Hill closed out the regular season with a pair of wins on Senior Night Thursday.

The sixth-ranked Bulldogs took down Fayette County (25-16, 25-27, 15-6) and defeated Meek (26-24, 28-26).

Seniors on the team are Hannah Dutton, Sam Norris and Zana Aderholt.

Carbon Hill (31-20), which will host the Class 3A, Area 10 on Monday, was led by Norris with 21 digs, 12 kills and four aces, Anna McGinnis with 17 digs, 12 kills and six aces and Dutton with 29 digs, 10 kills and two aces. Ivie Gibbons had 36 assists, 10 digs and four kills.

Carbon Hill opens the area tournament at 1:30 p.m. against Oakman. The tournament championship match is set for 4:30 p.m.

Dora goes 3-0 at Good Hope

Dora came out on top in a quad-match at Good Hope on Thursday, winning all three of its match.

The Bulldogs defeated Locust Fork (25-3, 25-21), Good Hope (25-18, 21-25, 15-12) and Vinemont (25-9, 25-22).

For Dora (21-16), Zharia Hubbard had 34 kills and 11 blocks on the day, Courtney Stone had 66 assists, nine digs and four aces, JaMya Harris had 37 digs, 10 kills and two aces, Jasmine Parker had 36 digs and Lizzie Lollar had 28 digs and two aces.

The Bulldogs play in the Cullman Tournament on Saturday.
