Jasper, Carbon Hill, Curry, Meek win area titles

Jasper, Carbon Hill, Curry and Meek took their first step toward the State Volleyball Tournament on Monday.

All four won area tournament titles, punching their ticket to the North Super Regional Tournament in Huntsville in the process.

All four teams earned sweeps on the day.

The North Super Regional Tournament is set for Thursday and Friday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. The top four teams from the regional advance to the State Volleyball Tournament set for Oct. 30-31 at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Jasper is going after its second straight Class 5A championship this year. Carbon Hill also made the tournament last year, placing second in 3A.

The season came to an end for Dora, Cordova, Oakman, Corner and Lynn on Monday.

Class 2A area tournaments, involving Sumiton Christian, Addison and Winston County, are today.

Jasper wins 5A, Area 11 Tournament

No. 1 Jasper defeated No. 9 Mortimer Jordan (25-14, 28-26, 25-15) in the area tournament championship match at Carl Cannon Coliseum Monday.

The Vikings opened the five-team tournament with a win over Corner.

For the Vikings, McKinley Ferguson had 20 kills, eight aces, two digs and a block on the day. Alex Oliver had 18 kills, six blocks and two aces, Jordan Gilbert had 10 kills and seven blocks, Dayion Johnson had eight kills and nine blocks, Temperance Chatman had 49 assists, five digs and one ace while Kelsey Shelton had four kills, five digs and an ace.

At the Super Regional, Jasper (56-9) faces Area 14 runner up West Point at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday.

Carbon Hill wins 3A, Area 10 Tournament

Carbon Hill swept its way to the 3A, Area 10 championship at home on Monday.

The seventh-ranked Bulldogs defeated county rival Oakman (25-13, 25-10, 25-10) before beating Winfield (19-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23) in the championship match.

Carbon Hill (33-20) faces Area 15 runner up Plainview at 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the Super Regional.

On Monday, Sam Norris had 35 digs, 33 kills and four aces, Hannah Dutton had 23 digs, 17 kills and six aces and Ivie Gibbons had 67 assists, 20 digs and three aces.

Dutton, Gibbons and Norris made the All-Tournament Team along with Oakman's Terrah Sherer.

Curry wins 4A, Area 12 Tournament

No. 6 Curry had no trouble getting through the competition in the 4A, Area 12 Tournament at Curry High School, beating both Cordova and Fayette County.

Curry opened with a with a win over the Blue Devils (25-11, 25-6, 25-17) before defeating Fayette County (25-8, 25-14, 25-18) in the championship match.

For the Yellow Jackets (49-11), Rae Ann Hall had 26 kills, six assists, five digs and two aces, Grayson Evans had 20 kills, six digs, three aces and two assists, Khloe Kimbrell had 28 assists, eight digs, six aces, three kills and a block, Allie Downs had 22 assists, eight kills, six digs and an ace, Abbey Moon had nine aces, six kills and two digs, Alayna Key had 20 digs and six aces and Linley Tubbs had seven kills and two blocks.

Curry faces Area 13 runner up West Morgan at 2 p.m. Thursday in its super regional opener.

Meek wins 1A, Area 12 Tournament

Meek went to Marion County and won the 1A, Area 12 Tournament title on Monday, beating the host team in convincing fashion — 25-20, 25-17, 25-12.

The Tigers (24-20), which defeated Lynn in Monday's first match, play Falkville, the Area 13 runner up, at 10:15 a.m. Thursday in their super regional opener.
