Prep Tennis: Jasper girls state bound

GARDENDALE — Jasper’s girls tennis team will vie for a state championship in Mobile next week.

The Lady Vikings earned a spot in the field with a victory in the Class 4A-5A Section 5 Tournament on Monday at Gardendale.

Jasper finished with 54 points, followed by Altamont with 39 points and Indian Springs with 33. Altamont with join Jasper at state as the section runner up. 

Jasper earned four section championships in singles with No. 3 Sophia Poolos, No. 4 Lillian Griffin, No. 5 Morgan Aldridge and No. 6 Jenna Brown winning titles. The No. 2 doubles team of Amelia Poolos and Gracie Spivy and the No. 3 doubles team of Sophia Poolos and Brown also came away as section champions.

The Class 4A-5A State Tennis Tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

Members of the team are Riley Aldridge, Mary Helen Williams, Lillian Griffin, Morgan Aldridge, Mary-Alice Pearson, Awmelia Poolos, Sophia Poolos, Jenna Brown and Gracie Spivy.

Jasper’s girls finished fifth in a loaded Class 6A field last season. The Vikings dropped a classification this season. Amelia Poolos had the top finish at the State Tennis Tournament last season, taking second at No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Mary-Alice Pearson and Lillian Griffin also finished in second place. 

UMS-Wright ran away with the Class 4A-5A girls state championship last year.

Jasper’s boys play at Gardendale today, looking to punch their ticket to the State Tennis Tournament.
