Sumiton Christian scored six runs in the top of the third inning and made the lead stand, beating the Pirates 8-5 on the road Monday.

Sumiton Christian pitchers Joe Hicks, Isaiah Wright, Sam Dixon and Griffin Myers combined for 12 strikeouts and stranded 11 Winfield base runners.

The Eagles took advantage of four walks and just one hit in the third inning. Sumiton Christian had just three hits on the day.

In the third, Corbin Hicks walked to drive in Garrett Potts with the first run. Myers and Dixon scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jake Jones for a 3-0 lead.

After a walk and a strikeout, Sam Shumate’s single drove in both Corbin Hicks and Jones. C.J. Bunn scored later in the inning on an error to make the score 6-0.

After Winfield cut the lead to 6-2, the Eagles scored two more runs in the sixth on Joe Hicks’ two- run single that drove in both Dixon and Corbin Hicks.

The Pirates scored their final three runs in the seventh.

Joe Hicks and Shumate finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs, Jones was 1 for 2 with a run and two RBIs, Corbin Hicks scored two runs and had an RBI, Dixon scored two runs, Myers scored a run and had two stolen bases and Potts scored a run and stole a base.

Dixon got the win for Sumiton Christian (1-0).

The Eagles host Fultondale starting at 3 p.m. today.

Carbon Hill 6, Dora 3

Carbon Hill scored six runs in the third inning and held on, earning a 6-3 road win over Dora on Monday.

Braden Wright got the win for Carbon Hill, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three in four innings. Laney Keeton went the final three innings, earning the save.

Wright and Jonas Pare were 1 for 3 with RBIs for Carbon Hill.

Dora was led by Tanner Earnest who was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Tyler Hicks took the loss on the mound.

Both teams play today. Carbon Hill (2-0) is at Meek and Dora (1-2) is at Minor.

Varsity Softball

Curry 14, Dora 0, 5 innings

Curry opened the season with a 14-0 road win over Dora on Monday.

For the Yellow Jackets, Alayna Key was 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, Linley Tubbs was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, Marissa Lawson was 1 for 1 with a double and two RBIs and Molli Freeman was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Alea Freeman earned the win in the circle, allowing one hit while striking out five in five innings.

Curry plays at Cullman today.
