Eagles win first two games at Sulligent

Oakman battled back from the brink of a first-round area tournament loss to claim the Class 3A, Area 10 championship at Winfield on Tuesday.

Oakman went a perfect 3-0 in the double-elimination tournament, earning the area tournament title as well as a spot in next week’s regional tournament in Tuscaloosa.

The Wildcats battled back from a 5-0 deficit to beat Carbon Hill 6-5 in their first round game. Oakman followed with a 16-0 rout of Lamar County.

After Lamar County eliminated Winfield from the tournament, Oakman defeated Lamar County 14-0 in the area championship game.

In the win over Carbon Hill, Oakman closed the game with three straight RBI doubles — all with two outs.

Savannah Brown’s double drove in Shalayiah Waid to cut the gap to 5-4, Samantha Kelly drove in Brown to tie the game at 5-5 and Chante Williams’ double drove in pinch runner Alaisha Hubbard for the game-winning run.

Katelyn Makemson got the win, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

For Oakman, Brown was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBIs, Williams was 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI, Kelly was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Waid was 1 for 1 with a run and AJ Barrentine was 1 for 3 with a run.

For Carbon Hill, Abby Martin was 1 for 2 with two runs and an RBI, Allie Parr was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI and both Alleigh Keeton and Karlie Ratliff were 1 for 3 with a run.

Ratliff took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Carbon Hill dropped its first two games, losing to Winfield 7-3 in 10 innings in an elimination game.

Santana Clark led the Carbon Hill offense, going 2 for 5 with a run, Ratliff was 1 for 5 with a run and Alayna Ivie was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Sarah Stovall pitched all 10 innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 13 hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Class 2A, Area 11

Sumiton Christian clinched a region berth and a place in the area title game with a pair of wins at Sulligent on Tuesday.

The Eagles return to Sulligent at 5 p.m. for the area championship game on Thursday. Sulligent will have to beat Sumiton Christian twice to win the area title.

Game 1

Sumiton Christian 8, Cold Springs 0

Mak Miller got the win for the Eagles, giving up one hit and five walks, while striking out six batters in seven shutout innings.

At the plate, Taylor Whisonant went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a double, two RBIs and a home run, Amber Hayes was 2 for 4 with two runs, Anna Calloway went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Angel Whitlow was 1 for 3 with a double, Jessie Baughan went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, AK Tyree had a hit with two runs scored, Sarah Hadder recorded a hit with three RBIs and Addy Russell had a hit.

Game 2

Sumiton Christian 7, Sulligent 2

Sumiton Christian earned a region qualifying bid and spot in the area championship game, with Calloway getting the win — giving up four hits and two runs, while striking out seven batters.

Offensively, Hayes was 3 for 5 with a run scored, Hadder went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Tyree was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, Baughan had a hit with a run, Calloway recorded a hit with an RBI, Kaley McCrary had a hit with a run scored, three RBIs and a homerun, Whisonant scored a run with an RBI and Russell scored a run.

5A, Area 11 at Hayden

Both Dora and Jasper went 1-1 in the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament at Hayden High School on Tuesday.

In the first game of the day, Dora defeated Jasper 4-1. Hayden knocked Dora to the loser’s bracket with a 19-1 win.

Jasper rebounded from the Dora loss by eliminating Corner 6-2. The Yellow Jackets fell to Mortimer Jordan 6-1 in their first game of the day.

Dora plays Jasper in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The winner plays Mortimer Jordan in a second elimination game.

Dora 4, Jasper 1

Dora eighth-grader Madison Hann went seven innings in the circle as the Bulldogs defeated Jasper 4-1.

Hann allowed four hits and two walks while striking out two.

At the plate, Callie Simmons was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run, Kayleigh Patterson and Chelsey Henderson both had a single and scored a run and Maddie Aycock added a hit.

Jasper 6, Corner 2

Ashton Prescott got the win, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in seven innings. Offensively, Khloe Kimbrell was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, Ansley Laye was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI, Tryneti Chatman was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Consondria Clay was 1 for 2 with a run and Mattie Hice was 2 for 3. For Corner, Jaden Goodwin and Lauren Higginbotham were 1 for 4 with an RBI.
