Prep Softball: Eagles win Carbon Hill tourney

Sumiton Christian won the Carbon Hill Invitational softball tournament on Saturday, going a perfect 4-0 in the event.

The Eagles got past host team Carbon Hill 7-3 in the championship game.

The Eagles started the day with a pair of pool play wins — beating Sipsey Valley 16-1 and Gordo 6-1.

As the No. 1 seed in tournament play, Sumiton Christian took down Sipsey Valley 15-0 before topping Carbon Hill for the title.

Gordo defeated Sipsey Valley 9-3 in the third-place game.

Sumiton Christian is back in action on Tuesday in the Class 2A, Area 11 Tournament at Sulligent. Carbon Hill plays in the Class 3A, Area 10 Tournament at Winfield starting Tuesday. The Bulldogs face Walker County Tournament champion Oakman at 11:30 a.m. in their first game.

Championship Game

Sumiton Christian 7, Carbon Hill 3

Anna Calloway pitched six innings in the win for the Eagles, giving up seven hits, three runs, a walk and striking out three batters.

Offensively for Sumiton Christian (31-20-1), Jessie Baughan went a perfect 3 for 3 with a run scored, a double and two RBIs, AK Tyree was 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs, Amber Hayes went 1 for 3 with four runs scored, Addy Russell was 1 for 3 with a run scored, Calloway recorded a double and Taylor Whisonant had a solo home run.

For Carbon Hill, Karlie Ratliff pitched four innings, giving up five hits, a walk and three runs. Sarah Stovall pitched three innings, giving up four hits and four runs with a strikeout.

At the plate, Alyana Ivie went a perfect 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Allie Parr was 2 for 3 with a run scored, Adison Alexander and Ratliff both had a hit and Santana Clark scored a run.

Tournament Play

Carbon Hill 6, Gordo 1

Ratliff got the win for Carbon Hill, giving up six hits, a run and striking out six batter in seven innings.

At the plate, Clark was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a double and two RBIs, Ratliff was 3 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Abby Martin had a double, Mahaley Pugh and Ana Grace Guy both recorded a hit with a run scored and Alexander had a hit.

Sumiton Christian 6, Gordo 1

Mak Miller pitched seven innings for the Eagles, giving up two hits, a run, three walks and recording six strikeouts.

Offensively, Hayes was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double and three runs scored, Calloway went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, Sarah Hadder went 2 for 3, Baughan was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Tyree scored a run with an RBI.

Carbon Hill 11, Sipsey Valley 7

Santana Clark pitched seven innings for Carbon Hill, giving up eight hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Alleigh Keeton went 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and five RBIs, Clark was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Alexander went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, Ratliff had a hit, Guy scored two runs with an RBI, Ivie recorded two runs and Pugh, Abby Martin and Allie Parr scored a run each.

Gordo 9, Carbon Hill 1

Stovall pitched six innings, giving up 11 hits and nine runs, with two walks and a strikeout.

Offensively, Ivie went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Abby Martin scored a run and Clark, Parr and Pugh each had a hit.
