Prep Softball: Eagles take down Cordova behind big inning

SUMITON — The second-ranked Sumiton Christian Eagles recorded 15 hits en route to a 12-2 victory over the No. 10 Cordova Blue Devils on Tuesday in Sumiton.

Kamree Lay gave up five hits in six innings in the win for Sumiton Christian, with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Offensively, Anna Kate Tyree went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Kendall Beth Sides was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a double, an RBI and a stolen base, Abbey Bice went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, Savanah Langston was 2 for 4 with a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases, Taylor Whisonant went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI, Lay was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, Amber Hayes went 2 for 4 with a run scored, Jenna Ergle scored two runs with an RBI and a stolen base and Angel Whitlow scored a run.

Raven Clark pitched the first five innings for Cordova, giving up five walks and striking out a batter before leaving in the sixth inning due to an injury. Abby Sargent pitched the final inning in relief.

At the plate, Grayson Kilpatrick and Hannah Ingram both went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a double, Emma Hyche and Kristan Swindle each had a hit and an RBI and Meagan Hicks recorded a hit.

After two scoreless innings to start the contest, Hyche drove in a run on a double in the top of the third inning to give Cordova a 1-0 edge.

Sumiton Christian (37-6) answered with two runs on a sacrifice RBI by Ergle, followed by a score by Sides on a passed ball for the 2-1 advantage.

The Blue Devils tied the game in the top of the fourth with a one-run double by Swindle, 2-2.

The Eagles regained control in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice RBI by Bice and an RBI single by Tyree for the 4-2 lead.

Sumiton Christian scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with run-scoring singles by Whisonant, Bice, Lay and Sides, a two-run double by Tyree and a sacrifice RBI by Langston for the 12-2 lead.

The Eagles face the hosting-Northside Rams on Thursday while the Blue Devils battle the Dora Bulldogs.

Northside 11, Carbon Hill 6

Northside picked up a road win at Carbon Hill on Tuesday, downing the Bulldogs 11-6.

The Rams took a 4-0 lead into the third inning. Carbon Hill cut the gap to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning, but Northside pushed its lead to 8-1 in the top of the fifth.

Carbon Hill scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the gap to 8-6, but the Bulldogs go no closer.

For Carbon Hill (20-17), Karlie Ratliff was 3 for 4 with a run, Allie Parr was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs, Katie Moore was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Alayna Ivie was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Santana Clark was 1 for 3 with a stolen base, a run and an RBI and both Makindle McGough and Abby Martin scored runs.

Sarah Stovall took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in two innings. Ratliff went the final five innings, allowing seven runs, one earned, on three hits, three walks and three hit batters.

Carbon Hill plays at Hamilton on Thursday.

Walker 16, Minor 1

Walker remained perfect in area play with a 16-1 home win over Minor on Tuesday.

Mabry Norris led a balanced attack for Walker (14-7-1) with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Blake Burton had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, Mia Griffin had a double and a home run with two RBIs, Khloe Kimbrell had a single, a double and three RBIs, Skylar Birdyshaw belted a two-run home run, Temperance Chatman had two hits, a run and an RBI and Kelsey Shelton had a single and a run.
