Prep Softball: Eagles rout Sulligent for area tournament title

Sumiton Christian scored 11 runs in the first inning and earned a 15-0, three-inning rout of Sulligent in the Class 2A, Area 11 Tournament championship game on Thursday.

With the win, the Eagles also earned a top seed at next week’s West Central Regional Tournament in Tuscaloosa. Sulligent, which hosted the area tournament after winning a coin toss over Sumiton Christian, advances to the regional tournament as the area runner up.

Thursday’s game was never in doubt.

Sumiton Christian’s first seven players reached base safely. Amber Hayes, Jessie Baughan and AK Tyree each scored twice in the first inning. Taylor Whisonant, Anna Calloway, Sarah Hadder, Kaley McCrary and Addy Russell also scored.

Anna Calloway earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out four.

Whisonant led the offense, belting a home run in the first inning. She finished 2 for 3 with a run and five RBIs, Hayes was a perfect 3 for 3 with a stolen base, three runs and three RBIs, Hadder was 2 for 2 with a run, Baughan was 1 for 2 with three runs and two RBIs, Tyree was 1 for 1 with a double, two runs and three RBIs and Calloway was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI.

Sumiton Christian (34-20-1) plays West End (14-16-1) at 3 p.m. on May 10 at Bowers Park.

West End finished as the 2A, Area 10 runner up to Cleveland.

Jasper and Dora out

Both Jasper and Dora were eliminated from the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament at Hayden on Thursday. Jasper knocked out Dora 11-7 before dropping a 16-2 game to Mortimer Jordan. Hayden defeated Mortimer Jordan to win the area tournament and take a top seed to the regional tournament.

Winston County earns regional berth

The Winston County Yellow Jackets knocked off rival Addison 8-0 on Thursday to eliminate the Bulldogs and ensure themselves of a runner up finish in Class 2A, Area 14 Tournament at Hatton.

Hatton defeated Winston County 16-0 in the championship game.
