Corner pounded out 18 hits and picked up a 13-3, six-inning win over Sumiton Christian on Thursday night at Corner High School.

Prep Softball: Corner routs Sumiton Christian

Corner pounded out 18 hits and picked up a 13-3, six-inning win over Sumiton Christian on Thursday night at Corner High School.

The Yellow Jackets scored 11 runs over the final three innings. The teams were tied at 2-2 going in the fourth inning.

Jaden Goodwin paced Corner at the plate, going 4 for 5 with two doubles, one run and five RBIs and Abby Shenck was 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

Four more players added two hits.

Ivey Hill was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs, Brantly Bonds was 2 for 3 with a run, Shelby Sanford was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases, three runs and an RBI and Lauren Higginbotham was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Both Lauren Dill and Jiselle Woodson went 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Corner (2-1) put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 7-3 lead, pulling away from there.

Hill got the win for Corner, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

For Sumiton Christian (3-4), Mack Miller took the loss, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 13 hits and two walks while striking out three in 4 1/3 innings.

Taylor Whisonant was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored for the Eagles, Kalista Cornelison was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Jessie Baughan scored a run and had an RBI.

Cordova 10, Carbon Hill 9

Raven Clark scored on an error to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, leading Cordova to a 10-9 victory over Carbon Hill on Thursday night at Cordova High School.

Carbon Hill (1-1) built an 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the second, but allowed seven unearned runs in the frame. Cordova took a 9-8 lead in the third and both teams scored just one run over the last five innings.

Clark also got the win for the Blue Devils, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits and four walks while striking out 10.

For Cordova (1-4), Haley Hann was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, Lillian Werling was 1 for 3 with a double, a run and two RBIs, Anna Key was 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs, Shayna Woods was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI and Clark was 1 for 5 with a run and an RBI.

Sarah Stovall suffered the loss for Carbon Hill, giving up two runs, no earned runs, on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

At the plate, Abby Martin was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, three runs and three RBIs, Santana Clark was 3 for 5 with a run, Allie Parr was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs and Alleigh Keeton was 1 for 2 with two runs.

Curry 8, Fayette County 3

Curry won its Class 4A, Area 11 opener on Thursday, beating Fayette County 8-3 at Curry High School.

The Yellow Jackets (9-2) were led by Linley Tubbs who finished 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs, Mollie Freeman was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Allie Downs was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Alea Freeman earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts in seven innings.
