Sumiton Christian softball team falls to Vestavia Hills

Oakman continued its hot start in 2017, sweeping Vinemont in their Class 3A, Area 12 double header Tuesday at Oakman High School.

The Wildcats won the opener 3-2 and followed with a 7-1 victory over the Eagles.

Oakman scored runs in each of the first two innings and led the opener 3-0 after five innings. Vinemont struck with runs in the sixth and the seventh, coming up one run short.

Brayden Hall went six innings and picked up the win. He allowed two runs, no earned runs, on two hits and five walks while striking out seven. CJ Hall picked up the save, striking out two in the final inning.

Offensively, Connor Woods was 2 for 3 with two runs, Jon Avery was 2 for 3 with a double, Jonah Trotter was 1 for 3 with a double, CJ Hall was 1 for 3 and Alex Ford scored Oakman's other run.

In the second game, the Wildcats (11-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning and made the score 4-0 in the second. Oakman added two runs in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.

Woods led a balanced Oakman attack, going 2 for 3 with two runs. Jon Dawson Tittle was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Brayden Hall was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, Ford was 1 for 4 with two RBIs, Sawyer Thompson was 1 for 2 with two runs, Trotter was 1 for 2 with a run and both Avery and Christian Hubbard added hits.

Thompson got the win, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking two in 5 2/3 innings.

Oakman plays at Vinemont on Thursday and hosts Curry on Friday.

Walker 3, Fayette County 0

Walker notched its 10th win of the season on Tuesday, blanking Fayette County 3-0 at Valley Park.

Will Dobbs and Ben Stallsmith combined on the shutout win. Dobbs got the victory, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three in five innings. Stallsmith picked up the save, allowing two hits and striking out two in two innings.

The Vikings got all the offense they needed in the third inning when Cam Robinson drove in both McKay Aldridge and Zac Durham with a two-run double. Walker’s final run came in the sixth inning when Taylor Whitley was hit by a pitch and scored later in the inning on an error.

Robinson finished 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Walker (10-3), Durham was 1 for 2 with a stolen base and a run and Dalton Turnbow was 1 for 3 with a double.

Walker plays a double header at Mountain Brook starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Sumiton Chr. 13, Jefferson Chr. 1, 5 innings

Sumiton Christian’s Grant Shepherd and Chandler Overton combined on a five-inning no hitter in a 13-1 victory against area foe Jefferson Christian on Tuesday at Blair Field.

The Eagles scored nine runs in the first inning to put the game away.

Shepherd got the win on the mound, allowing no hits or walks while striking out eight in three innings. Overton went the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on no hits and no walks and striking out two.

In the first inning, the Eagles scored all nine runs with two outs.

Shepherd had a pair of hits and two RBIs in the first inning alone. He finished 2 for 3 on the day, Overton was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI, Andrew Tubbs and Luke McDonald each finished 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Nick Collins and Parker Crauswell were 1 for 2 with a run, Peyton Alexander scored a run and had an RBI, Blaine Sharpston had three runs and an RBI while Jacob Jones, Caleb Headrick, Ryan Cole and Corbin Hicks each scored runs.

Sumiton Christian (8-2) plays at Jefferson Christian at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

PREP SOFTBALL

Vestavia Hills 4, Sumiton Christian 2

Sumiton Christian struck for two runs in the first inning, but was shutout from there as Vestavia Hills earned a 4-2 road win over the Eagles on Tuesday.

The Eagles led 2-1 after the first inning. Vestavia Hills tied the game with a run in the second inning. The Rebels added runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sumiton Christian had just three hits in the game. Savanah Langston was 1 for 3 with a run, Amber Hayes was 1 for 3 and Kendall Beth Sides was 1 for 4 with a run.

Kamree Lay suffered the loss. She allowed four runs — two earned — on five hits and four walks while striking out 13 batters.

Sumiton Christian (6-2) will play an area home game at Jefferson Christian starting at 2 p.m. today. The game was rained out on Monday.

Carbon Hill 15, Vinemont 0, 4 innings

Carbon Hill won its area opener at home on Tuesday, blasting Vinemont 15-0.

For Carbon Hill, Karlie Ratliff was 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs to pace the Bulldogs.

Makindle McGough and Allie Parr each had hits and drove in runs, Santana Clark was 1 for 2 with two runs, Adison Alexander, Abby Martin and Alayna Ivie each scored two runs and Katie Moore added one run.

Clark earned the win, allowing one hit and striking out one in four innings.

Carbon Hill (7-3) plays at Cordova today and hosts Oakman on Thursday.
