Prep Basketball: Woodley basket leads Curry to tournament title

DOUBLE SPRINGS — Curry’s Anna Reese Woodley knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 53-50 win over Haleyville in the championship game of the Winston County Christmas Tournament Saturday.
Curry (13-3) went a perfect 3-0 in the tournament, beating Hamilton, East Lawrence and Haleyville.

With the score tied at 50-50 and Curry inbounding the ball on the near baseline with 1.7 seconds left, the pass went to Woodley who put up the game-winning shot in front of a defender.

The game was close throughout.

Curry led 15-14 after the first quarter, 28-24 at the half and 40-36 going into the final quarter.

Tournament MVP Abbey Moon had 21 points and 11 rebounds for Curry, Allie Downs put in 11 points and both Woodley and Emma Martin had six points.
Winston County defeated Carbon Hill 47-37 in the seventh-place game to start Saturday’s play.

Sumiton Christian Holiday Classic

The Sumiton Christian Eagles advanced to the championship game of their holiday classic on Saturday, beating Westminster-Oak Mountain 54-49.
Sumiton Christian will play Appalachian at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the championship game.

In Saturday’s other games, Lynn defeated Berry 65-48, Appalachian beat Oak Grove 69-61 and Curry beat Meek 71-32.
