SUMITON — A night after becoming only the fifth Sumiton Christian player to top the 1,000 career point barrier, Isaiah Wright scored 25 points to lead the Eagles to a 68-56 home win over Addison on Friday night.
With the win, Sumiton Christian picked up its 10th victory of the season while avenging a road loss to Addison.
Wright and fellow senior Jeremy Brown combined to score 16 points in the fourth quarter. Wright put the game away by going 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final period.
Addison trailed by 11 points (46-35) going into the final quarter, but cut the gap to six points at 49-43 early in the fourth, after a 3-pointer and a dunk by Logan Wilkins. Sumiton Christian opened the lead back up to 10 points after a free throw by Jase Barrentine and baskets by Wright and Brown made the score 59-49 with 3:33 left. Addison didn’t get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Wright had nine points in the fourth quarter and was 13 of 15 from the free-throw line in the game. He had 13 points in Thursday night’s win over Jefferson Christian. He needed just four points to get to 1,000 points. Wright now has 1,034 points for his career.
Sumiton Christian’s other 1,000-point scorers are Andy Rice (1998), Josh Russell (2001), Justin Craig (2007) and Judson Laird (2019).
Brown had seven of his 10 points in the fourth quarter. Cody Long had 12 points for Sumiton Christian (10-5), Barrentine finished with eight points, Josh Allred had four while Eli Moon, Zach Hill and J.C. Sheffield each had three points.
For Addison, which earned a 63-61 win over Sumiton Christian earlier this month, Wilkins had 24 points, including 17 in the final quarter. Cannon Hiller added 11 points and Eli Howse put in 10.
Sumiton Christian defeated Jefferson Christian 76-38 on the road Thursday night. The Eagles outscored Jefferson Christian 35-11 in the second half. Long led the Eagles with 25 points and Barrentine put in 19.
Next up for the Eagles is the Sumiton Holiday Classic set to begin on Dec. 27.
Carbon Hill 69, Cordova 54
Carbon Hill took control from the opening tip and earned a 69-54 home win over Cordova on Friday night.
The Bulldogs led 15-3 after the opening quarter and never looked back, taking a 28-16 lead into the half and a 51-32 lead into the final quarter.
Carbon Hill (8-6) got a balance offensive attack led by Haden Pare’s 16 points. Clay Cerezo had 12 points, Alex Atkins added 11, Ishmael Jones put in nine points, Josh Kilgore had eight, Bryson Prince had seven and Matthew Wallace added six.
For Cordova (0-7), Kason Smith had 15 points, all in the second half, Jason Johnson had 12 points, Miguel Lopez had 11, both Dylan Hendrix and Cody Headrick had five and Hayden Bates put in four.
Both teams play again on Jan. 3 with Carbon Hill hosting Haleyville and Cordova hosting Sumiton Christian.
Carbon Hill 64, Cordova 35
Carbon Hill’s Alayna Ivie had a career high 29 points and Ally Martin had a triple double as the Bulldogs knocked off Cordova 64-35 on Friday night.
The Bulldogs led 21-7 after the first quarter, 35-17 at the half and 46-31 going into the final quarter.
Martin finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists, Bailey Kelley had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Kensley Barron had seven points and Alleigh Keeton had two points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. For Cordova, BG Braswell and Makensie Boteler had 13 points.
Carbon Hill (9-5) plays Clements at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Winston County Christmas Tournament.
Hamilton 66, Jasper 63
Hamilton made a last-second three pointer to earn a 66-63 victory over the Vikings Friday night. Jasper had rallied to tie the score in the closing seconds leading up to the Aggies’ game-winning shot.
Jasper (6-5) plays in the Winfield Christmas Tournament starting on Thursday.
