Prep Basketball: Oakman rally comes up short against Hanceville

OAKMAN — Oakman put together a furious fourth-quarter rally Friday night against Hanceville only to miss a game-winning shot at the buzzer as the Bulldogs earned a 66-64 area win at Oakman High School.

Hanceville held a comfortable 63-54 lead with two minutes left only to see Oakman catch fire down the stretch.

Skylar Hice scored eight points in the final quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

The Wildcats had one last shot at the victory after Hanceville missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the free throw line. Oakman’s final shot missed the mark as Hanceville kept pace with Carbon Hill in the Class 3A, Area 12 area race.

Oakman jumped out to a 7-2 early on Friday, but Hanceville responded with a 14-0 run for a 16-7 lead. The Bulldogs led 20-13 after the first quarter. The Wildcats rallied to take a 29-27 late in the second quarter after a Hice basket, but Hanceville scored the last six points of the period for a 33-29 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs outscored Oakman 23-20 in the third quarter for a 56-49 lead going into the final quarter.

For the Wildcats, Hice had 17 points, Christian Hubbard added 14 points, Nick Moody had 12 and Peyton Hill put in nine. For Hanceville, R.J. Evans had 23 and Raiden Morgan added 22.

Oakman hosts Oak Grove on Monday.

Varsity Girls

Hanceville 57,Oakman 39

Hanceville closed out Oakman with a torrid stretch to earn the Class 3A, Area 12 regular-season championship with a 57-39 victory over the Wildcats.

Oakman trailed by two points at the half — 27-25 — but went on a run to start the third quarter, grabbing a 33-27 lead at the 3:40 mark of the period.

From there, it was all Hanceville as the Bulldogs closed the game on a 30-6 run.

Hanceville scored the last nine points of the third quarter, taking a 38-33 lead into the fourth.

The Bulldogs knocked down three 3-pointers in the final quarter, running away from Oakman for the 18-point win.

Heather Thompson paced the Wildcats with 13 points.

Cassidy Campbell had 17 points for Hanceville, Karmen Johnson added 15 and Kierra Merriweather added 10.

Varsity Boys

Minor 60, Jasper 39

Jasper had trouble scoring over the final three quarters as Minor pulled away for a 60-39 home win over the Vikings in their Class 6A, Area 11 game on Friday night.

Jasper grabbed a 13-11 lead after the opening quarter, but the Vikings made just seven shots from the field the rest of the way. Minor battled back to take a 24-20 halftime lead. The Tigers added to their lead in the third quarter, taking a 41-29 edge into the final quarter.

Twelve players scored points for Minor (7-9, 2-1). Kaliph King led the Tigers with 11 points while Delonte Evans added nine.

For Jasper (7-15, 1-4), both Brady Jett and Ethan Walker had seven points.

The Vikings host Fayette County on Monday.

Varsity Boys

No. 8 Meek 42, Lynn 30

Meek shook off a pesky Lynn squad for a 42-30 home win over the Bears on Friday.

The eighth-ranked Tigers held a slim 7-4 lead after the first quarter. Meek also led 18-15 at the half and 25-20 going into the final quarter. The Tigers outscored the Bears 17-10 in the fourth quarter to earn the 12-point win.

Meek (17-4) won its sixth straight game. For the Tigers, Jacob Woodard had 12 points and both Luke Sherer and Haydon Twilley had eight.

For Lynn, Micah Cagle put in 11 and Noah Jackson added nine.

Both teams open play in the Winston County Basketball Tournament next week.
