Dora earns sweep of Oakman


Jasper fought off a fourth-quarter charge from Northridge to earn a 54-49 win over the Jaguars at Carl Cannon Coliseum on Friday night.

Devin Harris had 31 points for the Vikings, including 10 points in the final quarter.

Jasper held a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but Northridge opened the period with a 15-5 run to grab a 46-45 lead with 4:41 left.

Jasper (7-13) regrouped down the stretch to earn the win.

Ryan Childers made a 3-pointer to put Jasper up for good at 48-46 with 3:55 left. The Jaguars got within one point at 50-49 with 1:52 left, but Harris drove the lane for a layup and made a free throw to push the lead back to four points with 40 seconds left.

The Vikings led throughout the first three quarters. Jasper was up 12-3 after the first quarter, 32-19 at the half and 40-31 after three quarters. Jasper plays at Jackson-Olin Tuesday.


Varsity Girls

Jasper 36, Northridge 15

Jasper held Northridge to one basket in the first half en route to a lopsided 36-15 win on Friday.

The Vikings led 10-4 after the first quarter and outscored the Jaguars 10-1 in the second quarter for a 20-5 halftime lead. Jasper led 26-12 after three quarters.

McKinley Ferguson led the way for the Vikings (4-13) with 12 points while Jordan Gilbert added eight.


Varsity Boys

Cleveland Central (Miss.) 54,No. 2 Cordova 48

Cordova dropped a narrow decision to the No. 1 Class 5A team in Mississippi on Friday, losing to Cleveland Central 54-48.

The game was close throughout.

The teams were tied 11-11 after the first quarter. Cleveland Central took a slim 21-20 halftime lead. Cordova trailed 34-31 going into the final quarter.

Cordova, which has lost three straight games, cut the gap to one point with less than two minutes left, but the Blue Devils got no closer.

Jayce Willingham had 22 points and eight rebounds in the loss while Isaac Chatman has 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Cordova (11-6) plays Houlka, the No. 1 Class 1A team in Mississippi, today.


Varsity Boys

No. 6 Meek 67, Brilliant 29

Meek outscored Brilliant 17-4 in the second quarter to turn a close game into a blowout in a 67-29 area win at Brilliant on Friday.

The Tigers led 13-10 after the first quarter.

Jacob Woodard led Meek’s offense in the second quarter with eight points. The Tigers pushed their lead to 30-14 at the half. Meek took a commanding 48-21 lead into the final quarter.

Meek (14-4, 5-0) got a balanced offensive attack led by Woodard with 15 points. Ian Sargent added 13 points, John Mark Abercrombie had 12, Peyton Key added 10 and Kevin Chino put in nine. Meek plays at Winston County on Tuesday and hosts Addison on Thursday.


Varsity Girls

Dora 46, Oakman 44

Zharia Hubbard had 20 points and Makaiyah Smith added 12 as Dora earned a narrow 46-44 home win over Oakman on Friday night.

The teams were tied at 8-8 after the first quarter.

Dora (9-6) outscored Oakman 16-8 in the second quarter for a 24-17 halftime lead. The Bulldogs maintained a 38-32 lead after three quarters.

For Oakman (10-9), Alaisha Hubbard had 14 points, Heather Thompson had 13 points and nine rebounds and Chante Williams had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Dora also won on Thursday night, beating Good Hope 45-39 on the road.

Oakman hosts Vinemont on Tuesday in a 3A, Area 12 game.


Varsity Boys

Dora 80, Oakman 70

Four Dora players scored in double figures as the Bulldogs earned an 80-70 home win over the Oakman Wildcats on Friday.

The game was close through the first half.

Oakman led 12-10 after one quarter. Dora took a 33-31 lead into the half. The Bulldogs outscored Oakman 29-18 in the third quarter to take a 64-49 lead into the final quarter.

For the Bulldogs (8-10), Brent Geeter had 15 points, Averiun Berry added 13, Jacory Woods had 12, Jaymon Parker had 11 and Jamal Harris put in nine.

Christian Hubbard had 30 points for Oakman.

Dora also won on Thursday night, beating Good Hope 52-39 in an area road game.


Varsity Girls

Hanceville 49, Carbon Hill 45

Carbon Hill dropped a narrow area game at home against Hanceville on Friday night, losing 49-45.

Carbon Hill held a slim 13-12 after the first quarter. Hanceville grabbed a 29-27 halftime lead and took a 42-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

For Carbon Hill (8-9, 1-3), Molly Kate Atkins had 24 points and five steals, Lacey Evans had seven points and both Makindle McGough and Abby Martin each had four points.


Varsity Boys

Carbon Hill 54, Hanceville 44

Carbon Hill jumped out to a 15-point lead after the first quarter and made it stand, beating Hanceville 54-44 at home Friday night.

Isaac Woodard made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead Carbon Hill. Braden Wright added 11 points and Landon Bice put in eight.

Carbon Hill led 20-5 after the first quarter, 24-14 at the half and 39-30 after three quarters.
