Prep Basketball: Curry girls to play for tourney title

Cam Wright had 18 points, Allie Downs added 12 and Abbey Moon recorded a double-double as Curry earned a spot in the Winston County Girls Christmas Tournament championship game on Friday.
Curry (12-3) built a double-digit lead in the third quarter and picked up a 55-48 win over East Lawrence. Next up for the Jackets is today’s championship game vs. Haleyville at 2:30 p.m.
Against East Lawrence, Curry led 9-8 after the opening quarter and 28-21 at the half. The Jackets pushed the lead to 41-30 after three quarters.
Wright made four 3-pointers in the game while Downs connected on three. Moon finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. 
For the Eagles, Devora Izquierdo had 13 points and both Makayla Goode and Alexandria Jackson had 12.
Haleyville (5-6) hammered Clements 54-34 in the other semifinal game on Friday.
In Friday’s loser’s bracket games, Carbon Hill fell to Belgreen 59-34 and Winston County lost to Hamilton 61-42.
Today’s matchups begin with the seventh-place game pitting Carbon Hill (9-7) against Winston County (7-6) at 10 a.m. In the fifth-place game, Belgreen (13-4) faces Hamilton (9-6) at 11:30 a.m. The third-place game, Clements (8-10) vs. East Lawrence (3-12) is at 1 p.m., followed by the championship game.

Jasper girls go 1-1 in Scottsboro
Jasper’s girls went 1-1 in the Don Webb State Farm Christmas Tournament in Scottsboro on Friday, beating Boaz 46-38 and falling to Scottsboro 43-35.
Jasper (9-7), which has already eclipsed last year’s win total, held Boaz to just three third-quarter points in the opening win. The Vikings held a slim 35-33 lead going into the final quarter.
Idaysia Mercer had 14 points for Jasper, Alex Oliver had 13 and Jordan Gilbert put in eight.
In the second game, Jasper led by 12 points at the half before Scottsboro rallied for the win.

Sumiton Christian Holiday Classic
Sumiton Christian won its opener in its annual Holiday Classic on Friday, beating Lynn 52-39.
The Eagles (11-5) take on Westminster-Oak Mountain in today’s final game at 2:30 p.m.
In Friday’s other first-round games, Westminster-Oak Mountain defeated Berry 61-47, Oak Grove beat Meek 68-42 and Appalachian took down Curry 71-59.
In today’s opener, Meek faces Curry at 10 a.m., followed by Berry vs. Lynn at 11:30 a.m. and Oak Grove vs. Appalachian at 1 p.m. 
The three-day tournament concludes on Monday.

Jasper boys go 1-1 at Winfield
Jasper (7-7) knocked off Prattville Christian 52-42 and lost to Winfield 63-59 on Friday.
