Prep Basketball: Cordova runs past Dora

Chatman, Willingham combine for 56 points in area win


DORA — Cordova got the jump on Dora Tuesday night and the Bulldogs never recovered.

The No. 2 Blue Devils stormed out to a 14-2 first-quarter lead and coasted to a 68-49 victory, claiming the Class 4A, Area 10 championship in the process.

Cordova’s duo of Jayce Willingham and Isaac Chatman combined for 56 points and 27 rebounds on the night.

Four different players scored points in the opening minutes for Cordova (12-7 overall, 30=-0 in area play). Chatman made a pair of free throws, Demetrius Kirk knocked down a 3-pointer, Kam Cooper scored on a putback and Willingham threw down a dunk for a 9-2 advantage. After a pair of free throws by Willingham and a Chatman 3-point play, the Blue Devils pushed their lead to 14-2 with 1:34 left in the opening quarter.

Cordova led 18-4 after one period of play and got nine points from Willingham in the second quarter for a 33-13 halftime lead. Dora got no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

The Blue Devils held a commanding 46-30 lead going into the fourth quarter. Willingham and Chatman combined for 20 points in the final quarter.

Willingham led Cordova with 29 points and 11 rebounds while Chatman had 27 points and 16 rebounds. Kirk added seven points.

For Dora (8-11, 1-3), Brent Geeter made five 3-pointers and had 19 points while Jacory Woods made three 3-pointers and had 10 points.

Next up for Cordova is a home game against Good Hope on Friday night. Dora plays at Mortimer Jordan on Friday.

Dora 56, Cordova 26

Deja Pendleton scored 20 points as the Lady Bulldogs earned a 56-26 win over Cordova on Tuesday.

Dora led 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and 25-12 at the half. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 38-21 after three quarters.

Makaiyah Smith had 14 points and Kera James added 11 for Dora (11-6). For Cordova, McKinsey Boteler had six points.


Varsity Boys

Jackson-Olin 53, Jasper 46

Jackson-Olin scored 22 fourth-quarter points to make up a late deficit and beat Jasper 53-46 on Tuesday in Birmingham.

Jasper led 36-31 going into the fourth quarter, but scored just 10 points in the final period.

The Vikings led 16-11 after the first quarter and 23-20 at the half.

For Jasper, Kaden Shelton had 10 points and Jeremiah Hammond put in eight.

Jackson-Olin’s Demarius Houston had 20 points.

The Vikings (7-14, 1-3) play at Minor on Friday.


Varsity Boys

Oakman 85, Vinemont 43

Oakman had its way with Vinemont in their Class 3A, Area 12 home game on Tuesday, blasting the Eagles 85-43.

The Wildcats took control from the opening tip. The Wildcats led 18-5 after the first quarter, 44-22 at the half and 78-35 after erupting for 34 third-quarter points.

Christian Hubbard paced Oakman (6-8) with 22 points, Skylar Hice put in 17 points, Andrew Boone had 15 points and Nick Moody had 12 points in his second game back with the team.

For Vinemont, Hudson Wood had 16 points while Katch Johnson had 14 points.

Oakman hosts Hanceville in another matchup on Friday.


Varsity Girls

Oakman 60, Vinemont 10

Oakman held Vinemont to just two baskets in the entire game in a 60-10 home win over the Eagles Tuesday night in their, Class 3A, Area 12 matchup.

The Wildcats led 12-2 after the first quarter, 37-7 at the half and 54-8 going into the fourth quarter.

Heather Thompson had 16 points for Oakman (11-9) while Iyana Canada put in 15 and Alaisha Hubbard added eight.


Varsity Boys

Meek 55, Winston County 45

Meek outscored Winston County 27-16 in the second half to overcome a one-point halftime deficit and earn a 55-45 road victory on Tuesday night.

Winston County led 19-12 after the first quarter and 29-28 at the half. Meek rallied in the third quarter, taking a 45-37 lead into the fourth.

Both Payton Key and John Mark Abercrombie had 14 points for the Tigers while Haydon Twilley added eight. For Winston County (4-12), Samuel Taylor had 18 points and Justin Richie added 13.

No. 6 Meek (15-4) hosts Addison on Thursday.
