CORDOVA — Carbon Hill overcame a halftime deficit behind 26 points from Ishmael Jones as the Bulldogs earned a 50-41 road victory over Cordova on Tuesday night.
Cordova led 26-20 at the half, but was outscored 30-15 over the final two quarters. Jones, who kept the Bulldogs in the game in the second quarter by connecting on three 3-pointers, scored 15 points in the second half.
Carbon Hill jumped out to an early 11-4 lead before going cold. Cordova responded with a 9-0 run to close the quarter for a 13-11 lead. The Blue Devils led throughout the second quarter. Kason Smith and Jason Johnson scored baskets over the final minute of the quarter to push Cordova’s lead to six points at 26-20 at the half.
Carbon Hill wasted no time cutting into the lead in the third quarter. The Bulldogs opened with an 11-2 run. Clay Cerezo started the spurt. Haden Pare added a score to cut into the lead. After Cordova made the score 28-25, Jones buried a 3-pointer and converted a 3-point play for a 31-28 lead. Bryson Prince put Carbon Hill on top for good after his 3-pointer with 1:07 left in the period put the Bulldogs up 35-32.
Carbon Hill led 37-34 going into the fourth after a driving score from Jones in the closing seconds.
A basket from Cordova’s JR Isbell kept the Blue Devils within striking distance, making the score 42-39 with 3:08 left in the game.
Carbon Hill finally put the Blue Devils away from there with Alex Atkins adding two free throws and Jones making a shot and knocking down two free throws to push the lead to eight points.
For Carbon Hill (6-4), Pare had seven points, Prince had six, Matthew Wallace added five and Atkins put in four. The Bulldogs host Northside Thursday and travel to Oakman for a 3A, Area 10 game on Friday.
Miguel Lopez led Cordova (0-4) with 13 points, Isbell added 10 and Johnson had nine. The Blue Devils host Curry on Thursday in a 4A, Area 11 game.
Carbon Hill 71, Cordova 35
Alayna Ivie had 23 points to lead Carbon Hill past Cordova in their county matchup Tuesday night.
The game was close through the first quarter, with Carbon Hill holding a 14-12 lead, but the Bulldogs held Cordova to just six second-quarter points to take control.
Carbon Hill led 40-18 at the half and 52-25 after three quarters.
Ivie had 18 of her 23 points in the first half.
For Carbon Hill (6-4), Kensley Barron had 12 points, Ally Martin had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Katie Halbrook had eight points and 15 rebounds, Zana Aderholt had seven points, Bailey Kelley had five points and Alleigh Keeton had four points and 12 rebounds.
For Cordova, Makenzie Boteler had 21 points and BG Braswell put in 10.
Jasper 73, Hayden 42
Brent Geeter poured in 27 points and the Jasper Vikings evened their record with a 73-42 area rout at Carl Cannon Coliseum on Tuesday night.
Geeter connected on four 3-pointers and had 16 points in the second half alone as Jasper built a 23-point halftime lead.
The Vikings jumped on top of Hayden early and pulled away from there. Jasper led 20-13 after the first quarter and 48-25 at the half. Hayden scored just 17 points in the second half.
Jasper (4-4, 1-1) took a 64-37 lead into the final quarter.
Antione Harris had 11 points for Jasper, Garrett Pschirer had 10 points and both Trinity Epps and John David Harrell added six.
The Vikings play at Corner on Friday in another area matchup.
Jasper 45, Hayden 36
Jasper’s Idaysia Mercer and Hallie Harrell combined for 27 points to lead the Vikings to a key 45-36 area victory on Tuesday night.
Jasper led throughout and finally pulled away from Hayden in the fourth quarter.
Jasper (5-5, 1-1) led 8-5 after the opening quarter, 24-19 at the half and 36-31 going into the fourth quarter.
Mercer finished with 14 points for Jasper while Harrell added 13.
Jordan Gilbert added eight points for the Vikings, who fell to West Point 72-44 on the road Monday night.
Sumiton Christian 59, Curry 53
Sumiton Christian picked up its third win of the season against larger competition on Tuesday, earning a 59-53 home win over the Class 4A Curry Yellow Jackets.
Class 2A Sumiton Christian (8-4) also has wins over 5A Corner and 4A Oak Grove this season.
On Tuesday, the Eagles and Yellow Jackets were tied 13-13 after the first quarter. Curry led 28-23 at the half and 43-35 going into the fourth quarter. Sumiton Christian outscored Curry 24-10 in the final period to rally for the victory.
Isaiah Wright led Sumiton Christian with 25 points. Jeremy Brown added 11.
For Curry, Weston Horton had 17 points and Luke Smith put in 15.
The Eagles’ next game comes at Curry next Tuesday. The Jackets play an area game at Cordova on Thursday.
