Carbon Hill’s basketball season game to a heart-breaking end at Holly Pond on Monday.

The Bulldogs battled back from a nine-point deficit going into the final quarter, but their rally fell just short in a narrow 44-43 loss to the Broncos in their girls Class 3A sub-region game.

With the win, Holly Pond advances to the Northwest Regional Tournament in Hanceville.

Carbon Hill was looking for its second consecutive trip to the regional.

Holly Pond (15-13) held a slim 27-23 halftime lead over Carbon Hill. The Broncos pushed their lead to nine points after hold the Bulldogs to just four points in the third quarter. Holly Pond led 36-27 going into the final quarter. Carbon Hill battled back to take the lead late, but the Broncos went up for good with a layup with 15 seconds remaining.

Carbon Hill had one last chance, but the Bulldogs missed the potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"It hurts to lose, but what hurts the most is not being able to go to practice with these kids again this season. They are a terrific bunch and our three seniors are what high school sports are all about. Losing this game doesn't compare to the hurt of not being able to coach those kids on the basketball court again."

Abby Martin had a big game for the Bulldogs, scoring 18 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, along with 10 rebounds and 10 steals, Lacey Evans had eight points and five rebounds, Alayna Ivie added six points and four steals, Grayson Evans had five points and both Allie Parr and Bailey Kelley added three points.

The Bulldogs close the season at 18-13. Monday’s game was the last high school contest for seniors Lacey Evans, Abby Martin and Allie Parr.

Holly Pond will open play in the regional tournament on Monday at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
