OAKMAN — Two games that came down to the final seconds — and two heart-breaking losses for Walker County teams.

Both Oakman and Carbon Hill were eliminated from the Class 3A, Area 10 Tournament at Oakman High School on Tuesday night.

In the opener, Winfield hit the game-winning shot as the buzzer sounded as the Pirates picked up the 51-49 win.

Oakman battled back from an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit in the second game, but DJ Roberts’ game-tying layup with two seconds left on the clock missed the mark as Lamar County pulled off a 53-51 upset.

The Wildcats played the game without one of its top players — Christian Hubbard — who missed the game with the flu.

Carbon Hill held an 18-9 lead after the opening quarter against Winfield. Isaac Woodard had 10 points in the quarter for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs led 23-15 at the half and 39-37 after three quarters. After a Carbon Hill turnover in the closing seconds, Winfield got the ball to Graham Bradford who made a shot in the lane at the buzzer for the win.

Bradford finished with 21 points for the Pirates (21-8).

For Carbon Hill (12-17), Woodard had 16 points, Carson McGinnis added 11 and Jon Michael Madison put in nine.

In the nightcap, Lamar County led for the bulk of the game. The teams were tied at 19-19 after the opening quarter, but the Bulldogs held Oakman to six points in the second quarter for a 33-25 halftime lead. Lamar County took a 44-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Oakman (15-6) drew even at 49-49 with 2:22 left after an AJ Odom layup, but Lamar County responded with a basket and a free throw for a 3-point lead. A Skylar Hice basket cut the gap to one point with 14.5 seconds left and the Bulldogs added a free throw with 11 seconds left for the final point.

For Oakman, DJ Roberts had 17 points, Hice added 16 and Odom had 11.

Lamar County plays Winfield at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Oakman in the area championship game.
