Prep Baseball: Jasper wins area opener over Hayden

Jasper took to the road for its first area “home” game Friday night.

Playing at Corner High School, the Vikings picked up a 5-2 victory over Hayden behind the arms of Parker Sawyer and Topher Wilson in their Class 5A, Area 11 matchup.

Jasper’s home field at Valley Park is in the process of making the change to artificial turf. The field is expected to be ready within the next two weeks.

Against Hayden, Sawyer got the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and five walks while striking out seven in six innings.

Wilson got the save, striking out all three batters he faced in the seventh.

Jasper got on the scoreboard in the first inning with Peyton Thomasson scoring on an error. In the third inning, Tyler Thomasson drove in Kaden Shelton with an RBI single.

After Hayden cut the gap to 2-1, Jasper’s Tyler Morrison scored on a Sawyer sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Tyler Thomasson drove in Shelton with an RBI double in the fifth and Jon Burton scored on Sawyer’s triple in the sixth.

For the Vikings (6-3, 1-0), Thomasson was  2 for 3 with two RBIs, Sawyer was 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, Carson Alvis was 1 for 3,  Shelton stole a base and scored two runs, Peyton Thomasson stole a base and scored a run, Burton and Morrison scored runs and Mayson Slaughter stole two bases.

Jasper plays an area double header starting at noon today at Hayden.
