Corner trio tosses no hitter against Mortimer Jordan

Jasper dominated Hayden on the road in a pair of area games on Saturday, winning 8-1 and 17-4.

In the opener, Jasper (8-3, 2-0) erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to turn a 1-1 tie into a blowout win.

Mayson Slaughter led the Vikings’ offense, going 2 for 3 with two doubles, a run and four RBIs, Carson Alvis was 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, Tyler Thomasson was 1 for 2 with a home run, two runs and an RBI and Jon Burton was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Topher Wilson got the win, going the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two. Tyler Thomasson went the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run while giving up two hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.

Jasper scored 11 runs over the final two innings in the second game.

The Vikings had 18 hits led by Ayden Payne, who was 4 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Kaden Shelton was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, Slaughter was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, John Michael Crump was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, Tyler Morrison was 2 for 5 with a run and two RBIs and Connor Whitley was 1 for 4 with a run and two RBIs.

Jasper plays at Haleyville on Tuesday.

Corner got outstanding pitching on Saturday, earning a sweep of Mortimer Jordan.

Three Yellow Jackets combined on a no-hitter in the opener, a 1-0 victory.

Brayden Rowe held the Blue Devils to three hits in the second game, a 7-1 Corner win.

In the opener against Mortimer Jordan, Colin Daniel, Ethan Muncher and Jadyn Cagle combined for the no hitter. Daniel got the win, going four innings, striking out four and walking one, Muncher went two innings, walking two and striking out two while Cagle got the save, allowing two walks in one inning.

Offensively, Tyler McNiese, Andrew Baker, Tanner Hayes and Chandler Brakefield had hits and Cade Freeman scored the lone run.
Rowe won the second game, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out 13 in seven innings.

Corner (11-1, 2-0) trailed 1-0 until the fourth when the Jackets scored five runs to take control.

McNiese was 3 for 4 with a run and three RBIs, Rowe was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Tanner Hayes was 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, Cole Burkett was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Baker was 1 for 4 with an RBI, Daniel stole three bases and scored two runs and Hayes Brown and Brakefield each scored a run.

The Yellow Jackets opened up Class 5A, Area 11 play with a 6-3 victory over Mortimer Jordan on Friday night. Saturday’s opener also counted toward the area standings.

Hayes got the win on Friday, striking out nine in five innings. Daniel the save, striking out three and allowing one walk in one inning. Baker hit a home run and finished 1 for 2 with three runs and two RBIs while Daniel was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Corner, which has won six straight games after losing to Hueytown, hosts Dora in another Class 5A, Area 11 matchup on Tuesday.
