Jasper wasted no time winning the area championship — taking care of business in its first game against Mortimer Jordan on Wednesday.

Parker Sawyer held the Blue Devils in check on the mound and Slade Harbin belted a home run as the Vikings captured the Class 5A, Area 11 championship with an 8-2 victory at Valley Park.

Mortimer Jordan had to win Wednesday and Thursday to earn a playoff spot. With the loss, the 10th-ranked Blue Devils were eliminated from the postseason, giving Corner the area runner up spot.

Sawyer scattered nine hits over seven innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out two and walking one.

After both teams scored one run in the first inning, the Vikings put Wednesday’s game away with a five-run fifth inning.

Landon Nix led off the inning with a walk, Carson Alvis followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Pacey Gillott’s RBI single scored Nix for a 2-1 lead. Ryan Willcutt singled home Alvis and Harbin’s one-out single drove in Gillott for a 4-1 lead.

A fielder’s choice off the bat of Kaden Shelton resulted in two runs. Nick Keeton scored on the ground out and

Zac Durham scored on an errant throw for a 6-1 lead.

Third-ranked Jasper (21-8, 6-1) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Cam Robinson singled home Keeton in the fifth and Harbin belted a home run to left field in the sixth.

Durham drove in Jasper’s first run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Robinson.

Three different Jasper players had two hits. Durham was 2 for 3 with a stolen base, a run and an RBI, Robinson was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Gillott was 2 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI, Harbin was 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs, Shelton was 1 for 4 with two RBIs, Willcutt was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Alvis was 1 for 2 with a run.

Keeton scored two runs and Nix scored one.

Jasper plays at Mortimer Jordan today at 4:30 p.m.

Sumiton Christian 16, Vincent 4, five innings

Sumiton Christian moved closer to an area championship on Wednesday, beating Vincent 16-4 in five innings in their Class 2A, Area 9 matchup at Blair Field.

The Eagles can clinch the area title with a win at Vincent today.

On Wednesday, Joe Hicks shut down Vincent, allowing four runs, no earned run, on two hits and four walks while striking out 12 in five innings.

The Eagles (12-9, 3-0) took control early and led 11-2 after the second inning.

Corbin Hicks led a balanced Sumiton Christian offensive attack, going 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs, CJ Bunn was 2 for 2 with a double, four runs and two RBIs, Garrett Potts was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, Jarrett McLain was 2 for 4 with two runs, Jake Jones was 2 for 4 with a double, one run and three RBIs, Griffin Myers was 1 for 2 with a triple, one run and three RBIs, Joe Hicks was 1 for 3 with a run and Jordan Robertson was 1 for 2.

The teams play at Vincent today starting at 4:30 p.m.
