Poker run to benefit animal rescue

A poker run is set to benefit a local animal rescue organization.

Rescuers United for Furbabies will host the Motorcycles for Mutts First Annual Poker Run on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Kickstands will go up at 2 p.m. at The Barn in Jasper, located at 5450 Highway 78 W. Stops will include River Cafe, River Bend and Midnight Special, and the run will end back at The Barn, with the last bike in at 8 p.m.

Registration starts at 1 p.m. at The Barn, and participants may pre-register by visiting Jasper Veterinary Clinic or by emailing

Registration is $25 and $10 for an extra hand. Passengers may register to play for $10.

Poker play will begin after the ride.

RUFF co-founder Marsha Miller said proceeds from the event will go toward the rescue's vet bills.

"To date, we have spent over $66,000 at the vet this year, not including food and supplies," she said.

RUFF has taken in many animals hit by cars this year, as well as handicapped animals, Miller said. The rescue has also helped foster and re-home more cats compared to previous years.

The Poker Run will feature door prizes and raffle items, in addition to the ride and poker play. T-shirts will also be on sale for $25.

"We'll hopefully have a good turnout and hope the weather cooperates," Miller said. "I think it's going to be fun. It's definitely something different for us."
