Players of the Week: Carbon Hill's Atkins, Daniel take weekly honors

Alex Atkins was all over the field for the Carbon Hill Bulldogs on Friday night.

The senior linebacker came through every time his team needed a big play in a 34-20 victory that kept Carbon Hill’s playoff hopes alive.

Atkins had 17 total tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack and forced a fumble that was returned 79 yards for a touchdown in the final minute to finally put the game out of reach.

Atkins is the Daily Mountain Eagle PrepZone Defensive Player of the Week.

After a Lamar County touchdown cut the Carbon Hill lead to 21-20 with 3:37 left in the game it was Atkins who thwarted the 2-point conversion attempt.

The Daily Mountain Eagle’s back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year now has 70 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and three sacks on the season.

Offensive Player of the Week:

Devon Daniel, Carbon Hill

Carbon Hill freshman running back Devon Daniel came up big for the Bulldogs in the win over Lamar County on Friday night.

Daniel finished the game with 253 yards of offense and a pair of touchdowns. He rushed 15 times for 229 yards and caught two passes for 24 yards.

Daniel is the Daily Mountain Eagle PrepZone Offensive Player of the Week.

Needing points in the fourth quarter, Daniel scored a pair of touchdowns as the Bulldogs earned an important region win.

Daniel rushed for a 17-yard touchdown to give Carbon Hill a 21-14 lead with 8:17 left in the game and he added a 43-yard run with 1:17 remaining for a 28-20 lead.

He now has 640 yards and four touchdowns on the season.

Other top performances

•Parker Sawyer, Jasper: Had a perfect night in one half of play in Friday night’s 42-7 victory over West Point. The junior quarterback completed 7 of 7 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in the first two quarters.

•Colin Daniel, Corner: Totaled 225 all-purpose yards in Corner’s 28-0 victory at Dora on Friday night. Daniel completed 9 of 12 passes for 138 yards and rushed for 87 yards and a score on 13 carries as the Yellow Jackets earned their first region win.

Forrest German, Carbon Hill: Returned a fumble 79 yards for a touchdown against Lamar County and also had nine tackles and a tackle for loss.

Caleb Crider, Addison: Scored on both offense and defense in the Bulldogs’ win over Colbert County. He had a 3-yard fumble return for a score added a 6-yard touchdown run, both in the third quarter. Crider also had a pair of 2-point conversion runs.

Weston Smith, Addison: Scored three rushing touchdowns in Addison’s 44-12 victory over No. 10 Colbert County on Friday. He had touchdown runs of 4, 4 and 5 yards, finishing with 58 yards on nine carries.

Cade Naramore, Sumiton Christian: Scored both touchdowns for the Eagles in a 42-12 home loss to Tarrant. Naramore finished with three catches for 127 yards. His touchdowns went for 16 and 36 yards from quarterback Jordon Robertson.
