Our View: Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a great way to start the summer season. But, before hitting the lake or firing up the grill, take time to stop and think about the day and the reason we celebrate it.

There are two Memorial Day ceremonies set for Monday morning in Walker County — one in Sumiton and one in Jasper.

The Sumiton Area Veterans Board will host a ceremony at the Sumiton Community Center, while the Knights of Columbus from St. Cecilia’s Church will host their annual ceremony at Walker Memory Gardens. Both events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

These events will be attended by heroes who risked their lives so we can enjoy this holiday and our freedoms.

Those in attendance will include veterans from World War II to those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and every war in between. There will also be veterans at each of those ceremonies who carried out other assignments to protect our country.

The Daily Mountain Eagle urges area residents to attend one of these services and pay tribute to our fallen soldiers as well as our service men and women who survived.

When the events conclude, find one of those brave heroes who are still with us, shake their hand and tell them how much their sacrifices mean to you.

To all our military men and women, the Eagle simply says, “Thank you.”
