Oakman hires two new head coaches

Posted

Oakman has continued its busy summer of replacing coaches, hiring two head basketball coaches and a football assistant.

The moves were made official at Thursday’s Walker County Board of Education meeting.

Derek Roberts is Oakman’s new head boys basketball coach, Brannon Burleson is the new girls head basketball coach and Wayne Wilkes is a new assistant football and baseball coach.

“I think we’re going to be in good shape with our new coaches,” said Oakman High School Principal Patrick Gann, who also hired new baseball and softball coaches in June.

Roberts, who served as an assistant at Hillcrest-Evergreen, replaces Chris Berry, who spent three years as the Wildcats’ head coach. Oakman was 35-37 under Berry, advancing to the sub-region playoffs in 2015-16. Oakman has been eliminated by Carbon Hill in the area tournament each of the last two seasons. The team finished 9-14 last year, but returns its top two scorers from last year — Skylar Hice (20.8 points per game) and Christian Hubbard (18.4 ppg).

Burleson last served as the Curry girls head coach in 2014-15, leading the Lady Jackets to a 13-9 record. At Oakman he takes over for MaKenzie Burgett. Burgett amassed a 43-41 record in her three-year tenure, leading the Lady Wildcats to a Walker County Tournament championship last year as well as trips to the sub-region playoffs each of her first two seasons. Oakman returns three of its top four scorers — Chante Williams (9.6 ppg), Iyana Canada (9.4 ppg) and Alaisha Hubbard (7.6 ppg).

Wilkes joins the football staff after serving as Russellville High School’s co-offensive coordinator last season. Wilkes was previously on the staff at Cordova, helping the Blue Devils to the state quarterfinals in 2015. He’s also served as a head coach at both T.W. Martin (1996) and Carbon Hill (2004-05).

In an internal move, Paulette Berger has been moved up to head volleyball coach after serving as an assistant for coach Hannah Pendley last year.

The Wildcats named a pair of new head coaches following the June board meeting — adding baseball coach Clay Shearer and softball coach Jordan Burson.
