OAKMAN — Oakman Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its first benefit singing and barbecue supper on Saturday.

The fire department will be raising money to purchase medical supplies. Oakman Fire Chief Shane Calloway said some of their supplies are outdated, and having new items will allow the firefighters to better serve the community.

The event will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, with festivities being held around the new Oakman town sign, at the corner of Main Street and Oakman Parrish Road.

Local talent to perform during the fundraiser, beginning at 3 p.m., include The Busbys at 3 p.m., Ernie McClinton at 4 p.m., Jessica Coger at 5 p.m., Joby Rainer at 6 and 8 p.m. and David Gibson at 7 p.m.

The fire department will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches and barbecue nachos.

“It’s all great, local talent. We’re excited to have our first run at this and see how well it goes,” Calloway said. “It’s going to be barbecue and some good singing, everybody having fun and just enjoying each other’s company.”

No alcohol will be allowed at the event, but guests may bring their own lawn chairs and small coolers. Anyone who would like more information about the event is asked to call the fire department at (205) 622-3266 or Shane Calloway at (205) 275-8914.

Oakman Mayor Cory Franks said he hopes many people will come to the benefit for the fire department.

“They work hard to serve the people in our community, so we’re just asking everybody to come out and support them and be a part of their benefit singing so we can raise the funds for them to be properly equipped when they’re out servicing the people,” Franks said.
