RUSSELLVILLE — In a battle of Top 10 teams in Class 5A, No. 1-ranked Jasper shut out No. 8-ranked Russellville 31-0 Friday night.

The Vikings (8-0, 6-0 in Region 7) held the Golden Tigers (6-2, 4-2) to 147 total yards in the game. The shutout marked the fourth time this season that Jasper has held an opponent scoreless.

“We are excited. This is a good win. We have got to continue to grow. Our kids fought. Our defense got back to their ways. Our special teams got back to their ways,” Jasper Coach Bryan Moore said. “They were really sharp after a tough week. I’m proud of the kids for battling back and cleaning up a lot of the issues.”

Jasper was led defensively by Taris Rudolph and Harrison Saunders with 12 tackles each. Sheldrick Cherry added nine tackles. Brodie Vinson had seven tackles with three for loss, while Kevon Samuel had five tackles.

The Vikings offense finished with 457 total yards in a balanced effort that saw 229 in the air and 228 on the ground. Parker Sawyer threw for 165 yards on 11 of 17 passing as well as running for two scores. Kaden Shelton led the rushing attack with 147 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Shelton also caught three passes for 42 yards. J.C. Collins ran for 58 yards and a touchdown on six carries before leaving the game early with a knee injury. Denzel Chatman, Anthony Harris, and Averiun Berry all had more than 50 receiving yards.

Collins opened the scoring on the night with an 11-yard run to put Jasper up 7-0 with 9:58 left in the first quarter. Preston Reed increased the Vikings’ lead to 10-0 with a 34-yard field goal at the 6:08 mark of the second quarter. Jasper led 17-0 at the half after a Sawyer 1-yard run.

Sawyer scored on an 11-yard run with 3:48 left in the third quarter to put Jasper up 24-0.

The final score came with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter when Shelton scored on a 5-yard run to increase the final deficit to 31-0.

Jasper will host Hamilton (7-1, 5-1) next week in a game that will determine the region championship.

“Obviously, Hamilton has a good football team,” Moore said. “It is a winner-take-all type scenario and those are what you want. They will bring their best to Ki-Ro Gambrell Field.”
