New-look schedule for Jasper football team

Posted

The last time Jasper High School lined up against Lawrence County the helmets were made of leather.

Nearly 100 years later, the teams are scheduled to meet again.

With Jasper dropping a classification to Class 5A for the upcoming 2018 season, the Vikings welcome a new-look schedule under first-year coach Bryan Moore.

Gone are Class 6A state champ Pinson Valley and state power Clay-Chalkville. In their place, Jasper plays two teams for the first time in decades. The Vikings travel to Moulton to face Lawrence County for the first time since 1922. Also, the first home game comes against Corner in the first meeting between the teams since 1949.

Jasper moves to Class 5A, Region 7 this season. Region foes are Dora, Corner, Hayden, West Point, Lawrence County, Russellville and Hamilton. Non-region games are against Cullman, Central Clay County and Deshler.

The 2018 season opens with a pair of road games and an off week.

Jasper’s fans will have to wait until Week 4 for the home opener at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field against the Corner Yellow Jackets.

The Vikings play at Cullman (7-4 in 2017) in the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 23. The teams last played in 2013. Cullman  is under new head coach Matt Plunkett. Jasper leads the hotly contested series 34-33-2).

After an off week, Jasper opens region play at Dora (9-3). The teams are in the same region for the first time. The Bulldogs hammered the Vikings 30-7 last season. The Vikings lead the series 44-12.

Corner (5-6) makes the trip to Jasper in Week 4. The Vikings won the previous meeting, 26-0 in 1949.

Jasper hits the road in Week 5 to face former region foe Hayden (5-6). The Vikings are 8-0 all-time against the Wildcats, winning region games from 2006-13.

The Vikings step out of region play for a game against Central-Clay County (8-4) in Week 6. It’s the first meeting between the teams. Central Clay County was formed when Lineville and Clay County merged in 2013. The Volunteers have made the playoffs each season.

Jasper hosts West Point (6-5) to start off October. The teams were in the same region in 2010-11 with the Vikings winning both games.

The trip to Lawrence County (5-6) follows. The Vikings defeated the Red Devils 27-7 in Jasper in 1922.

Jasper hosts Russellville (3-7) in Week 9. The Golden Tigers suffered through their worst season since 1997 last year. The teams split four region games from 2010-13. Jasper leads the all-time series 18-12-3.

The Vikings close out region play at Hamilton (3-7). The teams last played in 1993. The Aggies lead the series 2-1.

The regular season comes to an end with a home game against Deshler (7-4). Jasper leads the series 10-9-3, splitting games in 2006-07.
