The Walker College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Janet Brown Ward and Agnes T. and Howard R. Brown Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund.
The new scholarship fund was established by Dr. William Q. Ward, O. H. and Marthanne Brown, and Steve and Judy (Brown) Hager, in memory of Janet Brown Ward and her parents. It will be awarded to students attending the Walker College-Jasper campus of Bevill State Community College.
The Ward & Brown Scholarship Fund represents the deeply held values of Janet Brown Ward and her parents, Agnes and Howard Brown, who were avid supporters of Walker College and believed students should have access to higher education.
This fund will have a preference for students who have chosen to study music.
Agnes Taylor Brown was from Double Springs, Alabama. She met Howard Richmond Brown of Jasper in a small church in Double Springs where she was playing the organ and he was performing in a quartet. The story goes that Howard, even though he had never met her, told his singing partners, “See that woman playing the organ? I’m going to marry her.” They married in 1938.
Mrs. Brown attended Howard College, later Samford University, and eventually earned a master’s degree in counseling. She served as counselor for Central Elementary and Middle School for many years. She was very active in the community and was a member of Lion’s Club Auxiliary, Crescent Study Club, Gamma Phi Beta and the American Association of University Women. She loved volunteering as a Girl Scout leader and working with mentally and physically challenged children, and children affected by polio.
Mr. Brown was a local businessman and owner of Brown Lumber Company. He built numerous houses in the Farmstead and East Jasper areas that still exist today. He loved playing golf and was a member of the Lion’s Club and the Jasper Coffee Table group.
They both were very active at the First Baptist Church where Mr. Brown served as a Deacon and Mrs. Brown led Sunday School classes. In addition, they both sang in the church choir for many years. They also were devoted followers of the Walker College Rebel Basketball team and attended all home games until they were no longer able to do so. Mr. and Mrs. Brown had four children, Joan Brown Lewis; O. H. Brown; Judy Brown Hager; and Janet Brown Ward.
Janet Brown was born in Jasper in 1951 and attended schools in the Jasper area. From the time she was in junior high school, one of her favorite activities was her participation in a group called the Lucky 7, a singing group which performed in competitions and for the community. She also sang in the First Baptist Church choir, as well as played the piano and the organ.
At Walker County High School, she was head cheerleader, president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the senior class, and was voted the senior with the most school spirit. She also served as the lieutenant governor of the Alabama Key Club. After graduating from high school, Janet attended Auburn University and was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. Upon graduation, she taught briefly at Walker College.
Janet met Dr. William Q. Ward after she earned a degree in dietetics and nutrition from the University of Alabama and began practicing as a registered dietician at University Hospital in Birmingham. She specialized in working with nephrology patients.
Ward was a dermatologist and instructor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). They met through their connections to UAB and married in 1988. The couple both had rewarding careers at UAB. After retirement, they moved to Florida and traveled extensively throughout France and other parts of the world. Janet died unexpectedly on June 28, 2018. It was her wish to establish a scholarship fund in memory of her parents. As a result, the family established the fund in memory of Janet and her parents.
Judy Brown Hager said, “Janet loved to read, she loved to travel, and she loved the water. She also loved to help people. She believed that providing scholarship funds to students who want to attend college was a permanent way to help people grow and succeed. This scholarship fund is her legacy and my parents’ legacy and it will continue to help people in this community for many, many years to come.”
The Janet Brown Ward and Agnes T. and Howard R. Brown Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund is the newest endowed scholarship fund established in the history of the Walker College Foundation. Other recent funds include the Dr. Jack L. Mott Endowed Scholarship Fund, Dr. David J. and Mary Ellen Rowland Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Bob Reed Mining Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Stella and John Whit Long Endowed Scholarship Fund, and the Larry Drummond Endowed Scholarship Fund.
