SUMITON – There is a new restaurant in town and it’s creating a great deal of buzz on social media. Yo Mamma’s Soul Food Café opened for business at 570 State Street in Sumiton on November 21. It’s a meat and a choice of two or three soul food dishes, according to owner Tiwanna Horn. “Everything is fresh, with nothing out of a can,” Horn said.
Business has been brisk, according to Horn. “The people have been very friendly. They’ve been coming in, and sharing their experience on Facebook,” she said.
Horn plans to open another restaurant in Fultondale, but the owner of the property in Sumiton approached her to ask if she was interested in opening a restaurant in here. “Once we saw it, we knew it would be a great opportunity,” Horn said.
Since opening three weeks ago, Horn learned about the Christmas on Main Street Festival on the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 29) and plans to keep Yo Mama’s Soul Food Café opened until 9 p.m. for festival goers.
The menu this past Friday was fried chicken wings, country fried steak w/gravy, catfish filet, whiting fish, chicken fingers, fried okra, green beans, potato salad, and dinner rolls. The dessert was homemade banana pudding. Horn was quick to point out that the menu changes daily.
Horn has been cooking for years for her church and at home. Her family encouraged Horn to use all her tried and true recipes and open a family restaurant. “This opportunity came and we took advantage of it,” she said.
Yo Mama’s Soul Food Café is open every day except on Wednesday. The hours through the week and on Saturday are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays.
