WEST POINT — Football fans will tell you that defense travels and the Corner Yellow Jackets proved that in a commanding win over the West Point Warriors Friday night.

Corner’s Joshua Myrick proved too much for the Warriors as he rushed for five touchdowns in a 35-7 win that kept the Yellow Jackets’ playoff hopes alive heading into next week’s home game against Lawrence County.

On Friday, Corner offense began to drive down the field on its first possession with a good mix of runs by Brody Tavel and passes from Colin Daniel to receiver Chandler Brakefield and tight end Cole Fuller. With 5 minutes left in the first quarter Myrick began his big night by plunging into the end zone from the 2 yard line for a 7-0 lead.

With West Point pinned inside its own 20 yard line on its ensuing possession, Corner junior Cole Fuller blocked the punt and Corner offense started the drive inside of the Warriors 20 yard line.

The offense kept the ball on the ground with Tavel and the drive ended with a Joshua Myrick 1 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was no good and Corner led the game 13-0 with 1:24 left in the 1st quarter.

Midway through the second quarter Myrick burst through the line and found the end zone once again for a 24-yard touchdown run. Clements would call Myrick’s number on the 2-point conversion attempt for a 21-0 lead.

The Jackets’ defense just would not be moved and once again West Point was faced with a 4th and long on their side of the field. West Point lined up for the punt and once again Fuller burst through the line and blocked his second punt of the game.

The Jackets recovered the blocked punt at the West Point 7 yard line and the offense took the field ready to score. On the first play from scrimmage at the warriors 7 yard line Josh Myrick plowed his way into the end zone for his 4th touchdown of the night. The extra point attempt from Lane Gilchrist was good and the Jackets led the game 28-0 with around 4 minutes left in the half.

Once again Gilchrist puts the kickoff in the end zone for a touchback and the warriors start their possession at the 35 yard line. Feeling the game start to slip away West Point throws a bomb from quarterback Will Cochran to wide receiver Kobe Bowers for a 65 yard touchdown. The extra point attempt by Logan Selby was good pushing the score to 28-7 with 3:35 left in the first half.

In the third quarter, Myrick went back to work as he busted through the line for the 1-yard score and his 5th touchdown on the night. The extra point attempt by Lane Gilchrist was good and made the score 35-7 with 3:14 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Skyler Traywick intercepted a long pass to seal the win.
