Murphy grabs first-round lead at Hudson/Weinstein Invitational

Paul Murphy of Trussvlle shot a six-under par 65 on Friday to grab the first-round lead at the 53rd annual Travis Hudson/Bernard Weinstein Invitational at Musgrove Country Club.

Twelve players are within five strokes of the lead in the three-day event.

Mississippi State golfer Garrett Johnson of Kimberly, Blair Hamm of Helena and Garrett Burgess of Birmingham begin today’s second round one stroke back. Clay Guerin of Birmingham, the 2017 tournament champion, and Cullman’s Ike Alexander are two strokes back.

Jasper’s Chase Thompson was Friday’s top local golfer, shooting a one-under par 70. He is currently in a three-way tie for 10th place.

Last year’s tournament champion Eli Marty of Cullman, who has placed in the top three each of the last three years, is nine strokes back after an opening-round 74. The 2018 champion, Sam Jeffcoat of Birmingham, is tied for eighth, four strokes back of Murphy.

Curry’s Mike Elliott leads the golfers playing from the white tees after shooting an even par 71 on Friday. Carbon Hill’s Jeff Burrough is two strokes back followed by Decatur’s Tracy Lentz, Dora’s Rayce Wadsworth and Jasper’s Bradd Whitaker, who are two strokes back.

Today’s early tee times start at 7:40 a.m. while the afternoon session starts at 12:30 p.m. Murphy tees off at 12:50 p.m.
