SUMITON – An accident on Wednesday at the Sumiton Church of God left a long-time church member dead and another man injured.

According to a published report on the WVTM Channel 13 website, 81-year-old Armond Pendley was assisting with renovations at the church on Hosanna Drive when the accident occurred.

Sumiton Police Chief T.J. Burnett told the Daily Mountain Eagle on Wednesday afternoon that Pendley was working aloft on a scaffold inside the church on Wednesday morning. The scaffold shifted and Pendley died as a result of the fall.

According to the station, Walker County Coroner Joey Vick said Pendley died at 9:30 a.m.

Jimmy Dodd, who is also a member at Sumiton Church of God, was injured in the accident and was hospitalized. No information was available on his condition at press time.

According to the published report, a church member told WVTM 13 that Wednesday night's church services were canceled.
