Magdalene Guthrie


Our precious mom and grandma Magdalene Guthrie of Jasper gained her wings and entered the arms of Jesus on Thursday, April 4, 2019.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 7th, 2019, from 1 pm until 2 pm at New Salem Nazarene Church. Funeral service will follow at 2 pm at New Salem Nazarene Church with Kilgore-Green Funeral Home Directing. Burial will be at Guthrie Cemetery. Rev. Johnathon Smith and Rev. Carroll Smith will officiate.

She was a devoted Christian and member of New Salem Nazarene Church. This is where she was an active member. She loved teaching her Sunday School class and sharing the stories from the Bible with her children. She had a heart for missions and worked endless hours to help others. She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great grand children. She taught them throughout her life about Jesus Christ and the love of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lloyd Guthrie; son, Eddie Dean Guthrie; parents, Oliver and Minnie Almar Smith; siblings, Arcenia Herhey, Nora Bell Bortolini, Nadine Guthrie, Pauline Dotson, Willie-Mae NeSmith, and S. D. Smith.

She is survived by her children, James Guthrie (Deb), Ray Guthrie (Donna), Charles Guthrie (Shirley), Daphne Pike (James), Evelyn Sims (Bryan); grandchildren, Angela Guthrie Hatcher, Amy Kelley, Charity Kendrick, Mandy Handley, Cassidy Pike, Faith Sims, Hope Sims, Mallory McLemore, Brandon Winstead, Marc Niver, Rusty Niver; 16 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; siblings, Jeanette Earnest, Becky Medders, Martha-Lee Courtney, A R Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Sims, Michael Kendrick, Matt Handley, Josh Northington, Brandon Winstead, Chris Prescott, and Caleb Hatcher.

The family is deeply appreciative to the loving service provided by Alabama Hospice, her care givers Tommie Madison and Barbara Johnston, that helped us take care of our precious mom.
