Mae Jemison turned three Corner turnovers into touchdowns in the first quarter and cruised to a 44-0 win over the Yellow Jackets in their Class 5A first-round playoff game Thursday night at Milton Frank Stadium in Huntsville.

After holding the Jaguars on fourth down on their first drive, Corner promptly fumbled the ball away at its own 24-yard line.

No. 6 Mae Jemison (10-1) needed just two plays to get into the end zone with Shead Hobbs rushing for an 18-yard touchdown. Francisco Murillo Mora added the extra point for a 7-0 lead at the 9:19 mark of the opening quarter.

Corner (5-6) fumbled the ball away on the third play of its ensuing drive, giving the Jaguars the ball at the Yellow Jacket 43-yard line.

After runs by Harry Crump and Diondrea Rice helped Mae Jemison get inside the 10 yard line, Daymond Eason went in for a 5-yard touchdown run and a 14-0 lead with 4:49 left in the first quarter.

Skylar Lara connected with Ethan Creel for a 25-yard strike off a tipped pass on Corner’s next possession, but disaster struck on the next play with Kyle Davis picking off a pass and returning the ball to the Corner 38-yard line. Rice followed with a 34-yard run to the 4-yard line and Mitchell Smiley scored two plays later from two yards out for a 21-0 lead after the opening quarter.

Smiley added a 10-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left in the half as the Jaguars pushed their lead to 29-0.

Mae Jemison added a safety and two touchdowns in the second half with Rice scoring from 1-yard out to cap the scoring with 1:09 left in the game.

Creel had two fumble recoveries for the Yellow Jackets, who lost in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year. The Jackets haven’t won a playoff game since 2006.
