LYNN — The Lynn Bears overcame several mistakes to advance past the Holy Spirit Saints 22-14 and earn a spot in the second round of the Class 1A Playoffs on Friday night at David Posey Memorial Field.

Lynn’s Jordan Davis broke a 14-14 tie with a 3-yard touchdown run with less than five minutes remaining in the game, lifting the Bears to their first playoff win since 2011.

With the win, fifth-ranked Lynn improves to 11-0. Next week, the Bears will host the Cherokee Indians (8-3) in the second round of the Class 1A Playoffs.

On Lynn’s first drive Friday night, a failed fake punt attempt gave the Saints the ball at their own 49-yard line. Six plays later, Holy Spirit (4-7) took a 7-0 lead on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Sam Contomo to Jarvis Dancy. The Bears used the ground game to go from their own 14 to the Saints’ red zone on the next drive, but fumbled the ball at the Holy Spirit 13-yard line, squandering away a scoring opportunity.

The second quarter belonged to the Bears, though, as they scored on each of their two possessions before halftime. The first score came on a drive originating from the Saints’ 49-yard line.

The Lynn offense ran the ball nine straight times, with the last carry going seven yards into the end zone by Jordan Davis to tie the game with 5:17 remaining in the half.

The Lynn defense forced a turnover on downs on the Saints’ next possession and the offense needed only two plays to score. With 2:33 to go, Lynn quarterback Noah Jackson connected with Dalton Adams for a 39-yard touchdown pass.

Lynn would take a 14-7 lead into the second half.

Both teams ate up clock in the third quarter, having only one drive apiece. Lynn’s drive ended with a turnover on downs, but Holy Spirit’s ended with a 42-yard, game-tying touchdown run by Contomo with 11:47 remaining.

Lynn ate up over seven minutes on its next drive, going 14 plays all on the ground and taking the lead on a three yard Davis run. Davis also ran in the two-point conversion attempt to go ahead 22-14 with 4:32 left in the fourth.

A kickoff out of bounds and a late fumble by Lynn allowed the Saints back in the game, but the Bears’ defense ended both drives on downs.

Lynn outgained Holy Spirit 310-215 on the night.

All but four offensive plays were runs, led by Davis who had 141 yards on 20 carries with two scores.

Riley Key added 42 yards on nine carries and Jackson ran 11 times for 36 yards. Dalton Adams had one catch for 39 yards and a score.
