Lawrence Norris, Jr., 95, of Sumiton, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019, at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie Bell Keeton Norris and Joseph Lawrence Norris; his step-mother, Lille Mae Prescott Norris; his son, Patrick Andrew Norris; his brothers, Teddie Leone Norris (Loudell), and Freddie Millard Norris (Mildred); and his half-sister, Margaret Marie Norris Ayers Stubbe.
He is survived by his wife, Saralee Helen Post Norris; his daughter, Sheila Glenn Ann Norris Doiron (Jody); his sons, Gregory Powell Norris (Rhonda), Kevin Bryan Norris (Marsha) and Larry Scott Norris (Cathy); grandchildren, Jason Paul Doiron, Matthew Ryan Norris, Mary Katherine “Katie” Norris, Joshua Alexander Norris, Catherine Danielle Norris; eight great-grandchildren, plus nieces and nephews; and a special brother-in-law, John Francis Post (Mary).
He was born on June 4, 1924, in Walker County, and grew up near Nauvoo.
He served from 1943 until 1964 in the United State Army. He was in the Korean War from its start with the 7th Infantry.
He was serving with the 1st Division when he married Saralee.
After he retired in 1964, he worked in Michigan for four years at Chrysler, Ford, and Scott Paper Company. He moved the family back to Alabama in 1968 and joined them shortly after.
He was a Mason from 1957 until his death, and was a member of the Brooklyn Lodge 704.
He worked at Custom Woodworks in 1971. He then joined Walker State Trade School in Sumiton in 1973, which later became Bevill Community College. He retired from there in 1989. He and Saralee took up camping, and they were proud members of the Alabama Wandering Stars Camping Clubs. They were like a second family to them.
There will be no formal funeral services. There will be a private family memorial to celebrate his life as he donated his body to UAB Research.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in his memory to St. Jude’s Hospital.
