CORNER — Corner proved it’s a player in the Class 5A, Region 6 race on Friday night, getting big outings from the running game and quarterback Skylar Lara in a 32-13 win over Curry at Corner Stadium.

Lara connected for two touchdown passes and both Garrett Purvis and Hunter Whitburn added rushing scores as Corner (4-3) improved to 2-2 in region play.

“We are taking it one week at a time. We have not even spoken about the playoffs,” Corner coach Zac Willis said. “We want to better last year’s record and have a winning season. So that’s our goal right now.”

Against Curry, Corner put the game away behind a 25-0 run that saw the visiting Yellow Jackets staring at a 32-6 deficit entering the final quarter.

Corner’s Patrick Pickle picked off a Curry pass on the third play of the game. The home-standing Yellow Jackets went straight to work, driving 66 yards in seven plays. Lara ended the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Whitburn. Chase Jones added the extra point for the 7-0 lead at the 7:13 mark of the first quarter.

Curry followed with a drive of its own. Peyton Luster had the big play, going 51 yards up the middle to the Corner one-yard line. Colton Burton went in for the touchdown two plays later, cutting the lead to 7-6 with 2:29 left in the opening quarter.

Corner followed with 25 unanswered points.

Corner added to its lead on the final play of the first quarter with Jones making a 32-yard field goal for a 10-6 edge.

Corner needed just three plays to score on its next drive with Lara hitting a wide open Caleb Brasfield on the sideline. Brasfield did most of the work, outrunning Curry defenders to the endzone for a 62-yard score. The home-standing Jackets led 17-6 at the half.

“We talked at halftime. Our goal was to take the ball, drive the field and score first and try to put the dagger in the heart,” Willis said.

That’s what Corner did.

To open the second half, Corner marched 66 yards in less than three minutes for a touchdown. Purvis and Whitburn opened the drive with runs of 20 and 24 yards respectively. Whitburn closed out the drive with a three-yard touchdown run as Corner pushed its lead to 25-6 with 9:17 left in the third quarter.

Corner added its last touchdown with 3:21 left in the third on Purvis’ 46-yard run.

Curry closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with John Moon hitting Colton Aaron for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 10:10 left in the game.

For Curry, Luster rushed 14 times for 96 yards, John Moon completed 7 of 18 passes for 51 yards with a touchdown and an interception and Aaron caught three passes for 34 yards and a score.

Purvis rushed 12 times for 107 yards and a score for Corner while Whitburn pushed up 62 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Nick Brashear added 69 yards on six runs in the fourth quarter. Lara was 8 of 15 for 125 yards and two scores and an interception.

Trent Shedd led the defense, racking up 16 tackles while both Pickle and Brasfield added interceptions.

Corner plays at Hayden next week while Curry (3-3, 1-2) looks to snap a two-game skid with a home game against Fairview.
