Kerry Leonard Sartain

Kerry Leonard Sartain, 67, of Jasper, passed away April 19, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on March 25, 1950 in Jasper, Alabama to Leonard and Lorene (Boyd) Sartain of Oakman. After growing up in Oakman, Kerry received both his Bachelors of Science and Masters of Education from the University of Alabama. In 1971, he married the former Diane Malone of Mobile, Alabama and they recently celebrated 46 years of marriage. Kerry and Diane have two daughters, Holly Sartain Border and Misty Sartain Whisenhunt, and three beautiful granddaughters, Cassidy Border, Avery Whisenhunt and Cadence Whisenhunt.

Kerry lived his life in the service of others. For thirty years he was a well known and beloved teacher of Biology and Anatomy. His first two years of teaching were at Boldo School and he spent the rest of his teaching years at Curry High School. In his last few years in public education he served as the Assistant Principal at Sumiton School. Even upon retirement, he still continued to teach as a homeschool Biology teacher. He also was a professional photographer on the side.

Kerry was a very involved member of Farmstead Baptist Church. He served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, youth chaperone and also was a member of the men’s softball team. He followed the Lord’s lead on many mission trips where he participated in construction work building churches and sharing the love of Christ. Kerry loved his years as a Gideon serving his Lord and serving his community.

Well known for his love of fun and adventure, Kerry had many interests. He enjoyed snow-skiing and water-skiing, scuba-diving, gardening, golfing, photopraphy arts, woodworking and leather-working, traveling, bee-keeping, music and Alabama football. And anything Kerry did, he always did with great enthusiasm and joy. Perhaps Kerry is best known for his faith in God, his deep love for his family and others and his innate curiosity about the world around him, which made him a lifelong learner.

Kerry is survived by his wife, Diane Malone Sartain; daughters and their spouses, Holly and Dustin Border of Huntsville and Misty and Dustin Whisenhunt of Jasper; granddaughters, Cassidy Border, Avery Whisenhunt and Cadence Whisenhunt. He also leaves behind his sister, Linda Sartain Johnson (Neal) of Scottsboro; brother, Ronnie Sartain (Linda) of Gainesville, Fla.; father-in-law, Earl Malone of Mobile; and sister-in-law, Barbara Walker of Mobile. He will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews.

Kerry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leonard and Lorene (Boyd) Sartain, as well as by many other loved family and friends.

Both the visitation and service will be held at Farmstead Baptist Church on Friday, April 21,2017. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m., with service immediately following at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Providence Cemetery (family only).
