John Henry Richardson, 77, of Jasper, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020, at Walker Baptist Medical Center.
John was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War with 101st Airborne Division 501st Infantry. He served honorably in the Army and for his heroic and courageous actions he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge (1st Award), Expert (M-14), Expert (M-60), Sharp Shooter (M-16), 2 O/S bars, and on Jan. 18, 1969 awarded the Air medal, for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight, by direction of the President of the United States under the provisions of Executive Order 9242-A.
He was a member of the VFW-Jasper and supported the Veteran's Group of Birmingham.
John had many interests in his life. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, baseball, football, music, dancing and family gatherings. John loved God, country and loved his family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Maurine Banks Richardson; father, Alvin Richardson; and sister, Sarah Barton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sandra Kelley Richardson; daughter, Ginger Lea Richardson (friend Ryan Nolf); son, John Kelly Richardson; sister, Linda Banks; and brothers, Tim Richardson (Belinda), Alan Richardson (Debra) and Tommy Richardson (Krystal).
Pallbearers were his nephews, Goose Banks, Johnny Mac Barton, Keith Nicewonger, Adam Richardson, Kevin Richardson and Wesley Richardson.
Honorary pallbearers were the Veteran's Group of Birmingham, AL, special service friend, David Kissell and longtime friend, Jimmy Richardson.
A special thank you to the VA doctors in Birmingham Ala., WBMC doctors and nurses and support staff, Comfort Care Hospice and physical therapy, Kelley's flea market and his WalMart friends in Jasper, Ala.
A military funeral will be held in his honor. Visitation was held Friday, July 10, at 1 p.m., with funeral services at 2 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Burial was at Union Chapel Cemetery. Joe Stahlkuppe and Jimmy Richardson officiated.
