Jasper wrestling moves up to No. 2 in Class 1A-5A

The Alabama Wrestling Coaches released their latest rankings on Wednesday, with several area wrestlers finding placement within the poll.

As a team, the Jasper Vikings are ranked second in the state for Class 1-5A thanks to a string of victories and winning the Austin Hamner Memorial Tournament.

Five Viking wrestlers received recognition in the poll, led by Brodie Vinson (285 pounds) and Preston Reed (152 pounds) — who were both ranked at No. 1. Dashton Rush (195 pounds) was ranked second, Maney Havis (145 pounds) was fourth and Alex Glass was ranked fifth in their respective weight classes.

Jasper coach Tripp Otis praised his team’s work and steady progress, citing the showings at the Gardendale Invitational and Hamner Tournaments as critical.

“Things are going well for our team — we’ve been doing a lot of wrestling. Our kids have performed like we knew they could. At the beginning of the year I knew we had a lot of potential, it was the question of whether they would wrestle like they’re capable of doing and they have,” Otis said.

“Placing third in the Gardendale Tournament was big — that was the first team trophy we’ve earned at an individual tournament since I’ve been with the program. Going into the Hamner Tournament, I knew we could do good, but after a slow start on the first day the guys really showed their abilities. We went eight for 10 in the finals — in which one of those losses were two of our guys wrestling each other. The guys are doing what we need them to do — they’re improving. Hopefully by the time the duals and sectional tournaments come around, we’ll be prepared.”

The Corner Yellow Jackets had three wrestlers place in the rankings, led by top-ranked Cole Fuller (220 pounds) and Nick Brashear (182 pounds).

Logan Thomas (195 pounds) was ranked at fifth.

Dora’s Bubba Henderson (285 pounds), the 2018-19 state runner-up, checked-in at third in the state rankings.
