Jasper stunned Mortimer Jordan on Thursday night, upsetting the Blue Devils on their home court, 51-46, to claim the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament championship.

The Vikings trailed by seven points going into the fourth quarter and dominated the final eight minutes, holding Mortimer Jordan to just one basket and seven total points.

Jasper made 10 free throws in the final quarter and got seven points from Trinity Epps. The Vikings outscored the Blue Devils 19-7 in the final period to pick up the win.

The victory gives Jasper a home sub-region playoff game on Tuesday against either No. 1 Wenonah or No. 2 Fairfield. The teams play for the Class 5A, Area 9 Tournament title tonight at Fairfield.

Mortimer Jordan, which won both regular-season meetings with the Vikings, was a perfect 9-0 against area foes going into Thursday’s game.

The Blue Devils led 10-6 after the first quarter. Both Ryan Thaler and Cole Bonner had four points in the second quarter for Jasper to keep the Mortimer Jordan lead at four points at 22-18 at the half.

John David Harrell had eight third-quarter points for Jasper, but three different Mortimer Jordan players hit 3-pointers in the period as the Blue Devils pushed their lead to seven points at 39-32.

Ronnie Wright connected on Mortimer Jordan’s lone basket in the final quarter. The other five points came at the free throw line. Both Bonner and Harrell had four points in the period as Jasper pulled away for the win.

Harrell led the Jasper (12-17) with 17 points, Bonner put in 12, Epps added nine points, Kaden Shelton had six, Thaler had four, Antione Harris added two points and Harrison Saunders had one. Epps and Harrell made the All-Tournament Team.

For Mortimer Jordan (14-13), Nolan Dean had 13 points and Ronnie Wright had 10.

Sumiton Christian, Meek lose on road

Both Sumiton Christian and Meek will travel for their sub-region playoff games next week. Both teams lost on Thursday.

Sumiton Christian dropped the Class 2A, Area 10 Tournament championship game to Vincent, losing to the Yellow Jackets 65-36.

The Eagles (21-7) travel to play the winner of today’s Cold Springs-Southeastern game on Tuesday.

Playing the No. 1 Class 1A team in the state, Meek fell to Decatur Heritage 84-31 in the Area 13 Tournament championship game on Thursday.

The Tigers (22-8) will make the trip to Pickens County for a sub-region game on Tuesday.

Pickens County (12-8) defeated South Lamar 82-68 on the road for the Area 10 title on Thursday.

Addison’s girls play at Red Bay today.
