Jasper up two spots to No. 7 in ASWA poll

Jasper jumped two spots in Class 5A in the latest prep rankings released by the Alabama Sports Writers Association on Tuesday.

The Vikings moved from No. 9 to No. 7 following a come-from-behind 36-27 win over Deshler last week. Jasper trailed the Tigers 27-19 going into the fourth quarter before outscoring Deshler 17-0 in the final 12 minutes.

The Vikings are the only local team ranked in the final poll of the season.

Jasper (9-1) opens the playoffs at home Friday against Sylacauga (7-3). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field. Jasper is in the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

In Class 5A, Etowah (10-0) holds down the No. 1 spot with 287 points and 21 first-place votes. Vigor (9-1) is second with 223 points and two first-place votes, Madison Academy (9-1) is third with 197 points and one first-place vote, Ramsay is fourth with 185 points and one first-place vote, followed by Mortimer Jordan (9-1 with 131 points), Briarwood (9-1 with 120 points), Jasper (9-1 with 90 points), Demopolis (8-2 with 82 points), East Limestone (8-2 with 46 points) and Greenville (8-2 with 27 points).

The Vikings’ current nine-game winning streak — they dropped the season opener to Cullman — is their longest since 2009 when the team started 0-2 before reeling off nine straight wins.

That streak started with an overtime win over McAdory in the regular season and ended with a second-round playoff loss to McAdory. The Vikings won 10 straight games in 2008 with Cullman on both ends of the streak — the Bearcats defeated Jasper in the third round of the playoffs that season.
