CORNER — Jasper started the second half with an 11-0 run to grab the lead and the Vikings held off every Corner rally the rest of the way to earn a 56-48 road win in the area finale for both teams on Tuesday night.

With the win, Jasper clinched the No. 2 seed in next month’s Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament at Mortimer Jordan. The teams entered Tuesday’s game tied for second place.

Corner and Dora both finished 3-5 in area play and will flip a coin to determine the third and fourth seeds.

Jasper trailed 8-6 after a low-scoring first quarter and 17-16 at the half, but caught fire early in the third period.

Ryan Thaler started the run with a 3-pointer, EJ Colbert added a pair of free throws, a Trinity Epps block led to a John David Harrell transition layup, Harrison Saunders added a basket and Antione Harris converted a steal into a score to give the Vikings a commanding 27-17 lead less than three minutes into the quarter.

Jasper (9-15, 4-4) led by as many as 11 points in the period after a Harris 3-pointer and a Epps basket made the score 32-21 midway through the quarter.

Corner fought back, cutting the gap to 34-28 on a 3-pointer by Trey Stokes late in the third quarter.

Jasper again pushed the lead to 10 points at 50-40 with 1:32 remaining in the game, but Corner made a late run. Kaleb Cummings made a 3-pointer, and after a Saunders basket by Jasper, Braylun Smith converted a four-point play to cut the Vikings’ lead to five points at 52-47 with 45.5 seconds remaining.

The Yellow Jackets crept within four points at 52-48 after a Smith free throw with 33 seconds left.

Thaler and Epps added free throws down the stretch to finally put the Yellow Jackets away.

Thaler led Jasper with 14 points, Harris had nine points, John David Harrell put in eight and Saunders had seven, including six in the fourth quarter.

Jason Manning led Corner (11-14, 3-5) with 16 points while Gage Bandy added nine.

Jasper, which snapped a three-game losing streak, plays at Russellville on Friday while Corner plays again on Monday at Carbon Hill.
